I would like to know what is the best way to lose weight without losing my energy level. I train 3x weekly and practice at home, soon I will be joining a gym and I would like to lose weight without becoming weak. The students at the Dojang I attend are very overweight, and when I suggest we all try to lose some weight, no one had any ideals on what was the best way to do it without losing our energy level or muscle tone. The sparring sessions we have are very intense, and some people have become very dizzy and ill trying to diet. If anyone has any advise, please let me know. You may also email me directly. Prince Loeffler The Law Firm Hoffman & Pomerantz LLP ------------------------------ From: "DanielC" Date: 27 Dec 2001 15:47:27 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: 6% body fat & love handles Charles, You asked of experinces with different bodyfat measurement devices, so I'll share mine. Using a handheld electronic I was measured to have "6%" bodyfat, after I did my victory dance (complete with jiggling love handles) my trainer told me to enjoy the feeling while he did a caliper measurement, which turned up a much more accurate 23% bf. All measurement methods have error, it just happened that my body style and composition really freaked the electronic device. These devices measure your resistance(muscle is more conductive than fat), and then based on your weight they estimate how much of each you are made of. There were a couple of factors that led to my 6% reading. 1. Measurement position. I was using a handheld, so it measured a circuit formed by both my arms and chest, which is what I have been working on enlarging(i.e. lots of new conductive muscle). 2. Body style. Huge legs must be a typical KMA thing, I have them, and a tendency towards a spare tire, i.e. all my fat is in the middle, away from the path measured by the handhelds. 3. Water retention. I normally hold a lot of water, and as I'm supplimenting with creatine, I've got an extra 8lb or so of water in my arms and chest, combined with all the other electrolites I have an excess of because of my diet, and you get _very_ conductive muscles. So the electronic device noted that I was very conductive and jumped to the conclusion that it must be because I had low body fat. I would hazard a guess that Sarah's high electronic reading was due to being mildly dehydrated due to diet and excercise, the device noted her high(and dry ;) resistance and assumed it was fat. Daniel "the walking lightning rod" ------------------------------ From: ABurrese@aol.com Date: Thu, 27 Dec 2001 18:27:01 EST Subject: the_dojang: Awareness: Two types - four stages I posted this elsewhere, but thought it might be of interest here too. Old new? Yes. Still relevant? Yes. Does everyone pay attention? Sadly no.... I thought I'd post something here to try and get more discussion going. Please feel free to add, disagree, comment on what I write so we all learn. I teach two types of Awareness. First, you must be aware of what is gong on around you. I break this down into the four color code system that many of us use when teaching. White: Not aware of anything. The only time you should be in white is when you are in bed, asleep, with the doors locked. Yellow: You are aware of what is gong on around you. Alert to any possible threats. This is the state you should be in at all times. Not paronoid, just paying attention. Besides giving you advanced warning of something amiss, you will also see things others may miss, like a nice sunset, a new store that just opened, a dollar on the side walk. (found two of them in the parking lot the other day on the way to rent videos) Orange: You sense something is up, so you pay a little closer attention. If you get a funny feeling, don't ignore it. All you are doing here is raising your awareness some because something may be up. If not, no harm done, but if something does happen by having an increased level of awareness you will be more prepared if you have to act. Red: Something is going down and you must act. You must fight or escape, but you have to do it now. This is the action that level orange prepared you for. This is just a simple system to teach people to be aware, and that there are different levels of awareness depending on what is going on around you. But then there is a second part of awareness that I teach. Besides being aware of what is gong on around you, you must also be aware of what you are doing that affects what happens. How you act can de-escalate a situation, or can make it turn violent. I can go into a biker bar and get along fine, but then I can go in and get stomped if I start bad mouthing those who ride Harley's. Same place, I'm aware of where I am, but I have to be aware of what I'm doing as well. Sounds simple, but many people don't realize this. They think their rules apply no matter where they are, and it just isn't so. Some places everyone talks and it's all hot air. Other places the same talk will get you shot. You better be aware of the difference and control yourself and act acordingly. For civilians I, Gunsite and others typically teach 5. There is a condition red as well as a condition black. From a seven year old post... In condition red something -is- wrong. You are starting to activate your tactical training, getting your weapons ready for use, taking cover, starting to get out of the area, dialing 911, whatever. In condition black the feces has hit the oscillator and a life, usually your life, is in danger. This is when you begin to employ deadly force to save your life or the life of another. And the real moral of the story is... Condition yellow is a great place to live!
