There's a great story in the Alaskan papers this week about a non-martial-artist who snagged the new Guinness record for the highest kick. "A slick Hollywood fitness guru stood poised to claim a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. A television crew was on hand to record the attempt at the highest martial arts kick in history. A patsy nobody had ever heard of was hired to make it all look like a competition. "Then a funny thing happened. "The patsy, an Alaska Native from Point Hope, beat the star -- and grabbed the record." Here's the whole story... http://www.adn.com/front/story/747133p-799643c.html Please note that Frankson did NOT do an e dan ahp cha ki. He used the traditional Alaska Native one-foot high kick, which requires the competitor to land on the same foot that he used to take off with. They made him stop at 9'8"! Try that at home!!! And take a look at his training method... "Frankson's workout regimen doesn't include any Billy Blanks videotapes or 1,000 stomach crunches a day. His calves are strong, he said, because he does a lot of skateboarding. His upper body is strong, he said, because he does "house chores." "The elders don't like drinking water from the faucets, so I drag a sledload of ice from the lake into town and they drink that," Frankson said, describing one of his chores. The sled is 8 feet long by 3 feet wide, he said, and a good load weighs 400 or 500 pounds. The lake is six or seven miles away." Who says you need to spend a hundred bucks a month to work out at a fancy gym!? Man Stabbed With Martial Arts Sword Thu 12-27-2001 , 11:18 pm STURGEON BAY, Wis. (AP) _ A Christmas Eve argument over the politics of the Sept. 11 attacks ended when a man killed his friend by stabbing him with a 38-inch martial arts sword, prosecutors said. A criminal complaint filed Thursday in Door County Circuit Court charged Steven Owens, 40, with first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of possessing a firearm by a felon. Owens was being held in lieu of $300,000 bail. Police said they found John Zelhofer, 36, in a pool of blood at his mother's west-side home at 9:20 p.m. Monday. Before losing consciousness, Zelhofer told officers that Owens stabbed him, the complaint said. His mother had called 911. Owens, arrested outside his home nearby, told police Zelhofer was at his home and they argued about the Sept. 11 attacks. Owens said he retrieved the sword from his bedroom and stabbed him once in the chest, investigators said. Police said Zelhofer left a blood trail as he ran to the home where he lived with his mother. District Attorney Tim Funnell said both men were drunk at the time of the incident. Emergency crews said they found a stab wound to Zelhofer's chest, which penetrated his heart, and what appeared to be an exit wound near his shoulder blade, Funnell said. Zelhofer died a short time later at Door County Memorial Hospital. When Owens was arrested, he threw his hands up and asked officers to shoot him, Funnell said. (contributor's name deleted) ~~~~~~~~~~~ I found it disturbing that the comment about new regulations and enforcement came from a martial artist. Following is my response. Have any of you run into martial artists that feel some kind of regulation of MA weapons is warranted?? On a separate subject, what safety policies do you enforce at your schools regarding weapons such as swords (live blade), nun-chucks, knives, and others? Sharon ~~~~~~~~~~~ >I found this story while browsing some links I had stored. >Makes you wonder at times if new regulations need to be updated or if old ones >need to be enforced? My response: Regulating what? Martial Arts weapons? The story said both men were drunk at the time. Should alcohol therefore be regulated? Stabbing someone to death has always been illegal (assuming of course it wasn't in self-defense), whether done with a sword, kitchen knife, broken broomstick or whatever. The crime took place in a private residence, so even current laws restricting the carrying of martial arts and other weapons wouldn't have prevented it. The killer was a felon who also had a firearm illegally in his possession. The inanimate object a crime is perpetrated with is not to blame. As experienced martial artists know, ANYTHING can be a weapon in knowledgeable hands. Sharon ------------------------------ From: "G.
