Visit Doce Pares Eskrima in Cebu City, the Philippines General Information Eskrimadores or any other martial artists as well as adventurers and travelers are always welcome to visit Doce Pares' headquarters in Cebu City. We can arrange very inexpensive accommodations or even put up small groups at the Doce Pares gym and headquarters facility adjacent to the home of GM Cacoy Canete. Several travel/training packages will be available shortly. We can provide advice on the best travel arrangements to get to Cebu, including pickup by Doce Pares at the Mactan International Airport. Currently, travel details of the packages have not been finalized. However, traing and visitation programs have been conducted at Doce Pares Headquarters gym for many years. Available training programs are described below. If you are interested in a truly unforgetable South Pacific adventure and learning experience in an exotic, unique and friendly country, you can contact Doce Pares and we will work out the details on an individualized basis right now.> Response: I trained with GM Canete in Jan/Feb 02. Great experience. Son Dennis also very nice. I believe Dennis is also a musician. It appears he may be the heir apparent to GM Canete's system. Many Cebuanos know of GM Canete and he is considered one of the best. Currently he is 82 and still vibrant. Caveat: Do not expect a U.S. style "gym". The facilities are spartan and are attached to GM Canete's home. The neighborhood is not the greatest but not the worst. You will experience the Filipino culture no doubt. About five days ago I received an e-mail from an individual for whom I have a great amount of respect in the field of Hapkido. The e-mail had to do with very ugly conditions which have returned to haunt the Hapkido family. To make a very long story short and to the point, two practitioners of the art I follow have again resurrected an on-going feud and it has erupted into bitter and devisive conflict. On the one-hand is a very talented and dedicated Hapkido practitioner who may have allowed his passions to have gotten the best of him. On the other hand is a dedicated and talented businessman who may have allowed his desire for commercial success to eclipse propriety and good taste. To watch this conflict play out on the Internet is disturbing and fearful. Both individuals involved have more than a little experience in Hapkido specifically, and Korean MA in general. I am wondering if you can imagine how embarrassing it is to watch these two folks who are closely identified with the Hapkido community conduct themselves with all the taste and finesse of a grade school at recess? In a word, I am indifferent to this bickering in as much as it is a reflection of two individuals who apparently believe that they are not getting everything each believes they are entitled to. My personal belief is that it is the height of arrogance for individuals, even those as unhappy and deluded as can be found in the US, to dictate to Life what it is that they think they deserve. In typical American style, two grown men are striking out at each other because Life has not given them what they want, when they wanted it, cuz' they wanted it. Each person has become the foil for allowing the other to express their anger and frustration at not getting what they want. There is, however, a very fine line that is about to be crossed here, and THAT does concern me some. Since it is a known maxim of Life that "misery loves company" there is a ready, steady tendency to spread this conflict out into the Hapkido community in general. This, too, has been a tradition in Hapkido for many years. Two people have a falling out and the Hapkido community pays for it with alienation, miscommunication and bad feelings. Unfortunately I cannot prevent Mssrs. Whalen and Hackworth from conducting themselves like gate-crashers at a 3rd grade birthday party. I can, however, refuse to allow myself to be used as an adjunct to their conflict. I would have thought that years associated with the Korean arts might have taught these gentlemen tools for addressing the toxic messages our American society teaches its men and women as they develop. Instead, it appears that what they have absorbed is the very worst in competition and mean-spiritedness that the Koreans have to sell us and this is now used to feed the worst of what an American can learn for his own culture. Nice going, guys. Yes, this IS a tradition in Hapkido, but not one that I am at all interested in. Mr Hackworth, I know you but a little, and what little I know is only enough to keep me at a distance from you and your activities. Mr. Whalen, likewise, I know you but a little and have an earnest respect for your skills and passion. I would not, however, allow my respect for you to be parlayed into becoming your accomplice in this embarassing display. I would like to make contact with you again, if and when you gentlemen can conduct yourselves in a way which does not embarass the Hapkido further. Best Wishes, Bruce W Sims Midwest Hapkido. Why weren't they in the contest....1 Most were not asked.....2 No need to show off because they have already won there reward by accomplishing the goal of increasing their jumping height. Who are these people Steve Terada and Anthony Atkins to name just two (NASKA World Champions...Anthony at least a 3 time champ). How do they improve their jumping ability lots of calf lifts, jumps, and jumps, plus tons of good old hard work (sometimes 4-6 hours a day). So don't be amazed at this guy...set your goal...go out there and don't stop till you get it right....even if that means all night. ------------------------------ From: KodanjaClay@aol.com Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 16:40:20 EST Subject: the_dojang: Korea Hapkido Federation Weapons Course Korea Hapkido Federation Weapons Course The Korea Hapkido Federation will be conducting a Weapons Certification Course and Dan Rank Exam in Orlando, FL on January 19, 2002.
