How do you get certified in weapons? I have been in Hapkido for quite a while and I have never heard of being "certified", does this certification come with a diploma or certificate saying that you are an expert in these weapons,, and if so, how could this happen in one weekend? No offense, just curious. While I do not want to get into this feud, I feel the need to respond. I know and have been on the mat with Master Hal Whalen and some of his very knowledgeable students. What I know of Dr. Richard Hackworth is only from this list and TKD Times. Since I don't know how this argument got started, nor do I really care, I can only say this; Master Whalen's rank and knowledge do not stem from paper certificates hanging on the wall, organizational patches he may wear, or the black bit of cloth he wears around his waist. Judging by his students and having seen Master Whalen perform on the mat, he is an excellent Martial Arts Instructor as well as practitioner, while I am sure he would not want his certifications to be voided, even if they were, his considerable knowledge of Hapkido would remain. Last question: When do we stop kowtowing to organizations that care more about money and politics than the training of good martial artists? Probably more than 2 cents worth, but what the heck, Rich (gaining more and more knowledge since '64) Hodder _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------------------------------ From: "Bruce Sims" Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 12:42:17 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Re: A tradition to consider.... Dear Frank and Ray: Hmmmm. Two men, with difference of opinions, meeting face to face and settling their issues once and for all and not smearing the situation all over the Hapkido community. Yes. I think THATS a tradition I could support. In fact, lets make that the de facto American standard for Hapkido in this country. When do we start? How do we make it happen? Who wants to help out? Thanks, Frank; thanks, Ray. I think the most important one for me was Patience. When he saw that I was getting frustrated with a slower than avarage student, he pulled me aside, actually into his office (a frightening prospect at best), and explained to me gently that if a student was in class, they were not in front of the TV zoning out. If they were in class, even if it didn't seem like it at the time, they were learning something, if they were not in class, they were learning nothing. In other words let Leo the late bloomer learn at his own pace, Martial Arts training lasts a lifetime.
