Granted that is an OKINAWAN System of weapons but since about 50% of all weapons techniques I have been shown from KOREAN sources seem to have a correlation. It seems to me that you have heard of CERTIFIED instructors in Hapkido. Why does the concept of a Certified Weapons instructor seem far fetched? I have spent 18 years studying Bo, Tonfa, Nunchaku, Sai, Baton, Cane, and Dan Bong. Of these weapons the only weapons that seem to be exclusivly Korean in origin is the Cane and Dan Bong. I have never experience them in any of my Japanese or Okinawan studies. In my teachings a student may obtain CREDENTIALS as a CERTIFIED WEAPONS INSTRUCTOR. What does that mean? The indiviual is qualified by my standards to pass on the principles and techniques of Weapons usage. Rank in my opinion is earned just like respect, not by filing paperwork and making sure you rubbed elbows with the "right" grandmasters, it is achieved ON the mat, not from looking at the mat from a chair next to the soda machine. Whatever happened to the old days when rank wasn't as important as knowledge and ability? When you were judged by your students and not by some dude in Korea whose name you can't even pronounce, whom youv'e never met or much less know? You can strip me tomorrow of every Hapkido ranking I have, but I still know what rank I am deep down inside of my soul, and regardless of how many fake black belts someone else recieves they ALSO know what their REAL rank is deep down in their soul. Like Doju Nim Ji says, "never lie to yourself because your soul will not forgive you". The WHOLE conversation? Whoever sent it to you, is irrelevant. Hal Whalen ADMITTED to sending out this email. The sad thing is, this all began from Dr. Hackworth asking Hal to reign in one of his students. I know this for a fact, as I had words with the same student. NOW once again, WHAT place does this have in a public forum? It is their business, and one I do not think it should have been brought here, and two, not to agree with, or disagree with what anyone has said, it was juvenile to a) distribute a private conversation and b) to bring said conversation here. As to the rank question, Hal Whalen has requested rank recognition from the KHF. The KHF has a right to know whether or not this person a) meets their standards and b) is supportive of the KHF. This problem with Hal Whalen and Dr. Hackworth is not very bright for Hal Whalen considering Dr. Hackworth is the only Kwan head recognized by the KHF who is American. I personally would like to see the personal issues remain that, and off of a public server. Heck, if DD is going to stoop so low as to continue publishing this kind of garbage, and indeed taking sides, whan an impartial moderator should have said "Not here", then I may as well go back to the "other list". I do however, think I agree with Dr. Hackworth in that rather than hiding behind a keyboard, why not put your money where your mouth is? Get on the mat. We all know that the lessons learned on the mat go into daily life. This is not a challenege, but an invitation to Hapkido players. Either work together, or be silent. Keep personal issues, just that personal. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 21:17:19 PST Subject: the_dojang: silly feud > Were you a party to the conversation? And out of popular magazines? > Heck, if DD is going to stoop so low as to continue publishing > this kind of garbage, and indeed taking sides, whan an impartial moderator > should have said "Not here", then I may as well go back to the "other list". And you should certainly feel free, at any time. > I do however, think I agree with Dr. Hackworth in that rather than hiding > behind a keyboard... Umm, that was me that said that. Look... both sides are probably AT LEAST a little at fault, yes? Why not work this out, or simply agree to not get along? Unfortunately martial arts is replete with politics. Yet it is still not reasonable to threaten to "have my big brother beat you up" as a result (at least not after elementary school) just because we don't agree or like each other or because someone intentionally or unintentionally did us harm. I have been lied to, lied about, threatened and probably worse, yet I would never think of complaining to some martial arts authority as a result. Work it out by talking, or on the mat, or just let it go. After all LIFE IS JUST TOO SHORT to do otherwise.
