The weekend or even week long training events are designed to give one the essential foundation skills. Once this first level of skills is mastered one would move on to the next level of training. It also helps separate martial arts technique from martial fantasy. I have seen some "Hapkido Cane" techniques that were nothing more than violent swings with a cane. It does not take a great deal of techniques to "Thug Whip" someone with a stick of any kind. But it does take some organized training to help everyone get on the same sheet of music for training purposes. That way if a student moves and starts training somewhere else they will still be learning skills based on the same principles. This type of event is also a great time for sharing with others. Often times one of the participants will share a technique with the group that they developed or came across when the "standard" did not work well on the body type of their opponent. It is also a time when the history of a certain weapon is explained in detail along with the training. It is true that no-one will "master" a weapon in just a few hours. But everything that we learn well is done step by step. Many times a certification is a means of tracking the training time put in more than it is a qualification. Many law enforcement personnel are required to attend a few hours of baton type training. Does it make them an expert? No. Does it better prepare them for future use of that weapon? Yes. Let us not over analyze a topic just to belittle those who care enough to attend extra training. These are very popular. There was a Hapkido tournament in Colombia in 1989 that resulted in 3 broken elbows, 2 broken wrists and one death by heart attack. It was the first and last Hapkido tournament that they had. Several students from our school have enjoyed competing in the Sports Jujitsu Tournaments but have not attended an actual Hapkido tournament. I have heard of an annual Hapkido Tournament in Germany but have never heard the rules or outcome.
