Hapkido Chun Do Kwan is 34 years old. It was established in 1968. At that time, the KHF did not exist. Grandmaster Oh, Se-lim established the KHF after Sin Moo Hapkido DoJuNim Ji, Han-jae went to the US. Hapkido Chun Do Kwan is a member of good standing in The Korea Hapkido Federation led by Grandmaster Oh, Se-lim. I withdraw my offer of my KHF dan number. Am I afraid that I will be found out to not have legitimate KHF rank? No, I tested at KHF Headquarters in Seoul by the Grand Children's Park. Rather, there's been too many threats being thrown around about revoking rank. It would be unwise for me to play into the hands of less scrupulous people. Besides, I cannot see why any friendly person would ask for my dan rank. I have communicated with other KHF certified dan holders in the US and I have never asked for their dan ranks. The last thing we need in hapkido is separate certification for weapons techniques, striking techniques, joint lock techniques, throwing techniques, etc.? As soon as we separate weapons training from the rest of hapkido training we forget that a weapon is simply an extension of our existing technique. We can also easily forget that the other limbs are of importance. If you are training in a martial art that is devoted to a particular weapon such as modern Japanese iaido, you are not getting a weapons certification, you are still obtaining rank in that art. In many hapkido dojang the student is not allowed to hold a weapon until they are 1) an adult and 2) at least a chodan. This was true almost everywhere when I put on a white belt in 1974 and is true today in most traditional hapkido dojang. Certification: If a teacher has to revoke a students rank, they need to evaluate their own teaching capabilities. If they are trying to revoke rank given by another teacher then they need to evaluate their own concerns. Just my opinion.... Competition: <> I was with Master West and Dr. Kimm on that trip to Korea and I have to agree completely. The competition did start to get out of hand and we should leave competition to other arts. On another note, Master Han Jung-Doo, president of the WHGF, was with us through most of the trip. He told me that his competitions were demonstrations. 1st dan against 1 attacker, 2nd dan against 2 attackers, 3rd dan against 3 attackers, etc. Jere R. I have not seen GM Myung in over a year now. I hope he gets a chance to stop by and visit when he is in the U.S. soon. He usually stops by to see Master Marshall Johnson up in Michigan also. It is indeed sad about his son. We pray for him and his family. I'm sure that those that have trained with GM Myung Jae Ok would agree that nobody moves like him. A truely unique martial artist who has contributed greatly to the world.
