What the hell does the tournament mean? Does it mean you fight using TKD rules or something like that; this would seem like a disadvantage for most HKDers. Also I was wondering if any one knows what happened to my old instructor in Elizabeth, NJ,. Master Yuk Koon Shim, who taught Moo Doo Kwan/WTF? Last time I was in NJ the school was gone and I could find a listing for his school in the Yellow Pages either. In determining a person's seniority, what are the primary (or overarching) factors? If person X reaches first degree black belt before person Y, but person Y eventually passes up person X in dan level, who has seniority? Does person X always have seniority regardless of rank just because he reached first dan earlier? ===== International HKD Federation-Sun Mu Kwan USA www.ushankido.org Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! I was only once at the IHF`s (the late GM Myung`s one) European Championships in Holland back in 1994. It wa a kind of demonstration, with patterns, breaking, falling and self-defence shows. I saw reports from Hapkido fighting events in Germany in Austria. They seem similar to Sport JJ events, with headgers, fist protectors and foot protectors. The rippling effect of the Mixed Martial Arts phenomenon is still being felt. The trend began quite a few years ago when karate schools began offering jujitsu material and taekwondo schools offered hapkido techniques. This happened because that is what the students wanted. They want a comprehensive style and don't care about the legitimacy of whether it all came from the same place or not. Leave no doubt about it, those that are white belts today will be the leaders tomorrow. I'm all for cross-training but not for hybrid styles. This usually ends up in some material being sacrificed for something else. Usually the reason for this is it's "ineffectiveness." More often than not, it is due to a lack of understanding of the principles or just plain not putting enough practice in it. I say this because we have all heard students ask why this techniques doesn't work :) What we can do, is offer multiple arts but keep them seperate so both the "traditionalists" and the "realists" can get what they need. Besides, at a certain level, it is all the same. I was at a seminar in Ottawa in November which was for the most part a Japanese-style affair. A brown belt (now black) was with me as well. She wanted to watch the Aikido people teach. We watched them for the whole class. I asked her what she thought of it. She told me that they were doing the same thing that we do only with a few variations. I got a big smile and told her that she now understood. :) Lorne --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2002 13:58:29 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] ITF split ? One might attain a higher rank, but your seniors are those that reached Il Dan before you. Thus they have a lower Dan number. Others?
