Hello Klaas: A good old Dutch name I presume:) In many cases, I have seen Instructors sacrifice much of their time (and possible promotions for themselves) to teach students that in later years passed them in rank. In fact, I myself passed some of my earlier Instructors. While I might now have a higher rank, I might have never achieved it without their help and motivation. I would be more than happy to show my respect and gratefulness by sitting behind them. In my view, rank, age, and seniority in time of training can only be addressed through respect. Sometimes correct protocol does not allow for this. Any thoughts? It is quite an accomplishment to reach that position, not matter what federation bestows it. On a similar note, Charles (Chuck) Sereff was the first non Asian to be presented 9th Dan Grand Master in the ITF. This was in December of 1999. In the ITF there is no physical test beyond 7th Dan master. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net If someone were to create his own art and grant himself a 14th dan in it, you would think he'd be more creative with his title. I'd choose Spectacular Mighty Poobah or something like that. --- begin quoted text --- Message: 4 From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" ---snip--- Every time I hear the word GM it reminds me of the first time I saw or heard the word. It was in BB magazine back in, I am guessing, the early 80's. Some out of shape, overweight man who was barely out of his teenage years but took the title of GM and was a 14th dan of some art he made up. You are either a Master/Mr./Mrs./Dr. Just my opinion....Jere R. There was a Korean Master from Hong Kong at one of our tests. He was introduced by our Master as a 9th Dan in TKD, "a Grandmaster". I can picture him, but can't recall his name. He did not speak any english. For Kukki-TKD folks, a Grandmaster is typically those either 8th or 9th Dan. Never heard Senior Grandmaster before, but then that means little. Then again, remember this was a newspaper article and they may not have reported it correctly. Imagine that... :) Off to Philadelphia in a few hours, hope to visit with GM JI Han-jae tomorrow.
