By now he is probably in Nashville for the seminar we'll be doing there. He asked that I give the members of the_dojang his best. My name is Danny too, for one. I started TKD when I was 19. This was 1976. I already had had 3 inguinal hernias, and have had 4 more since, for a total of 7. I too can do the full splits in all directions. But I do not think that flexibility is the cause per se. Perhaps for some people, but in my case, I have an identical twin brother. He does not do martial arts. He has had 4 inguinal hernias. My grandfather also had 4 and my mother has had 3. inguinal hernias are much less common for women. So in our cases at least, the doctors all have said that this is a genetic problem. Also, I have known several men to get these things, but only when they have lifted something, sneezed, etc (my brother's last one was from coughing hard). Nobody, in all my years of MA training, has every told me they got a hernia from the training itself, including stretching. That all said, you will probably never know for sure what caused it, if you are not sure already. But I think it is pretty safe to think the odds are that something else caused it. BTW: Find a doctor who does these repairs regularly. Not a general surgeon. The more experience you get upfront will save you in pain and recovery time, and perhaps another such experience later. I used to think that all surgeons who had any experience with these were basically the same. But they are not.
