By now he is probably in Nashville for the seminar we'll be doing there. He asked that I give the members of the_dojang his best. Ray> Response: When in Philly you gotta try the original Philly Cheesesteaks. Those are the ones that "Boys to Men" sang about. There are a coupla nice places around there where yous can buy some nice greasy cheesesteaks. You always know your in a good place when you see the old pictures of old Italian guys on the wall. Like Frank Sinatra's picture that reads "Vinny, good luck...great food..." Now, Ray, take a visit down to Little Italy in Philly. It is one of the last vestiges of an old Italian Market. They also have a place that still makes pasta and a shop that has hangin' cheese. All good stuff that evokes a lost era. There are a coupla boxing gyms, and the place where Smokin Joe Frazier has his gym. Also, stop by the sports center where the statute of Rocky is prominently placed. There is an Asian Center and a large shop that sells martial arts supplies. Now Philly ain't Brooklyn or Queens, New York, but it is close. And, watch out for Crazy Joey and the gang that could not shoot straight. Still around there hangin out at the Bergen Hunt and Fish Club. YOu know the guys who are into loan sharkin', murder for hire, and other con games. Me. Well, I am taking privates with an Eskrima/Silat Master. Last night we did crashing, elbows, stick drills, and take downs. Bye, Big Ken Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! I thought a GrandMaster was someone who had promoted a student to the rank of Master (5th Dan)???......" I'm sorry that you were misinformed. The term "grandmaster" is a contrived title utilized by many commercial interests to suggest a level of position and prestige which may or may not truely be in evidence. The same self-inflating nimrods who stress their status are also the ones who make an issue of such things to other people. The intent of this exercise is to make sure that money continues to flow in a single well-defined direction, and that power and authority also flow back in a single unchallenged direction. The Korean Martial traditions never had such a title. In fact, the Japanese tradtions, likewise had no such title, opting instead to identify various levels of competence and authority through a system of certifications and licenses. However, as OS Funakoshi borrowed the ranking practice from his friend OS Kano, and since a number of Korean ex-pats who trained in Japanese arts never knew anything but the ranking system, it was part and parcel of what those ex-pats brought back to Korea after WW II.. In the United States, despite all our grandstanding about an egalitarian society, people love to parade around with an ersatz title hoping to get the respect from people with a title what their personalities or behaviors couldn't earn on their own. If you will accept a word of advice, perhaps you would be better served by only judiously using a title, and never when compelled. One will hear that their Master's Master is their Grandmaster, just as your father's father is your grandfather.
