First of all, thank you everyone who responded on my master/grandmaster question. It is so true that Americans seem to get so caught up in titles... It is such a shame for a nation to have so many words, but none of them can quite capture the meaning that a single Asian word (character) can. I think (hopefully, perhaps naively) that the quest for the proper title comes from students wishing to honor or respect the person they address. Personally, since I started TKD, I find myself saying yes, ma'am and yes, sir to just about everyone I come in contact with... (it really raises eyebrows in the McDonald's drive-thru line) :-) So, in this trend, I have a question... How do the founders of this art (Korean/Japanese/Chinese, etc) distinguish titles? Do they simply use Sabumnim, Kyosanim, or are there some other titles? Respectfully, Mary ~a TKD student :-) --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Kaustubh Patil" To: Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 19:13:01 +0530 Subject: [The_Dojang] some online resources (newsletters) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net BlankHello everybody, I am learning teakwondo for about 1.5 years..I wanted to know if there are any newsletters on the web, that anyone of you have come accross which guide you in learning martial arts. I want some newsletters that can provide instructions (and maybe pics as well) about various exercies, kathas etc... I know some sites where this information is available, but what i am looking for is some newsletter which come in to your inbox directly rather than you going to the site.. hoping for some positive responses,, :-) KP [demime 0.98e removed an attachment of type image/gif which had a name of Blank Bkgrd.gif] --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 7:43:13 PST Subject: [The_Dojang] a non-smoker now Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just back last night from Philly. For those of you that know Hapkido Grandmaster Ji you also know that he -was- a smoker. He is now very proud of the fact that ~4 months ago he stopped, "cold turkey", and hasn't had a smoke since. Great news! Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 28 Jan 2002 7:48:44 PST Subject: [The_Dojang] non-digestified ? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net With the new format of the_dojang it should now be easy to open subscription up to those that would like a non-digestified version. i.e. the msgs would come individually instead of bunched together in an issue of the digest. The last time we checked into this (a couple years ago) only a handful of people were interested in that. But it is time to check again. If you'd like that type of subscription please drop me a private email at the addr below. Thanks. I just got a date for my operation from my surgeon. It is in 3 weeks from now. The doctor said, they do these repairs regularily. A friend of mine had such an operation and he had to stay 5 days in the hospital (left and right inguinal hernia). For me I have it only on the right side (I hope the left doesn't show up...). Doctor said, I will have to stay 3 or 4 days in hospital. There is a plastic net being sewed at the groin and I have to stay away from training for about 2 weeks. After these 2 weeks I will be able to train normally and be able to do everything like before. (the only thing that could show up is that my body rejects the plastic net - but that is a small percentage to have that) Which operation method did you have because you had it 7 times up to now??? Yours in training, Daniel Taekwondo / Austria >>> Message: 3 Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2002 15:19:20 -0700 From: danny To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] inguinal hernia - groin problems in TKD Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Daniel, Lots of similarities I could talk to. My name is Danny too, for one. I started TKD when I was 19. This was 1976. I already had had 3 inguinal hernias, and have had 4 more since, for a total of 7. I too can do the full splits in all directions. But I do not think that flexibility is the cause per se. Perhaps for some people, but in my case, I have an identical twin brother. He does not do martial arts. He has had 4 inguinal hernias. My grandfather also had 4 and my mother has had 3. inguinal hernias are much less common for women. So in our cases at least, the doctors all have said that this is a genetic problem. Also, I have known several men to get these things, but only when they have lifted something, sneezed, etc (my brother's last one was from coughing hard). Nobody, in all my years of MA training, has every told me they got a hernia from the training itself, including stretching. That all said, you will probably never know for sure what caused it, if you are not sure already. But I think it is pretty safe to think the odds are that something else caused it. BTW: Find a doctor who does these repairs regularly. Not a general surgeon. The more experience you get upfront will save you in pain and recovery time, and perhaps another such experience later. I used to think that all surgeons who had any experience with these were basically the same. But they are not. (the only thing that > could show up is that > my body rejects the plastic net - but that is a small percentage to have that) I just had a hernia repaired, left over from a surgery a few years back. The net material was used. But I was told to not play golf for 6 weeks (even tho I don't play golf) to give it time to heal. Point being to not do much more than walking for exercise during this healing time. Just fyi...
