Maybe if I hear it from fellow martial artists, I'll have more will power to quit. Tell me your story. Discussed in this Brief: The effect of oleoresin capsicum (OC), or pepper spray, on respiration, particularly when combined with positional restraint. Researchers exposed 34 subjects to OC spray, both while sitting and in the prone maximal restraint position. Key findings: OC exposure and inhalation do not result in a significant risk for respiratory compromise or asphyxiation, even when combined with positional restraint. In the sitting position, OC spray inhalation and exposure resulted in no respiratory compromise. There was no evidence of abnormally low oxygen levels or abnormally high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2). In fact, the lower CO2 levels for this group suggest that OC spray may actually increase ventilation slightly. Researchers detected no difference between the OC and placebo groups in the restraint position. There was some decline in pulmonary function, but not enough to be clinically significant. As in the sitting position, OC seemed to increase ventilation. OC exposure did, however, result in an increase in blood pressure, perhaps due to the discomfort and pain associated with OC. The clinical implications of this finding remain unknown. This study had a number of limitations. First, not all of the conditions that occur when OC and restraint are employed in the field could be reproduced in the laboratory. Second, the effects of prolonged sprays or repeated exposures were not studied. Third, all of the subjects were cadets at the local police academy and were generally healthy. Fourth, the study did not investigate the long-term effects of OC exposure or the potential for complications from chronic occupational exposure to OC. Target audience: Law enforcement policymakers and practitioners, defense and prosecution attorneys involved in OC spray criminal and civil litigation, and medical examiners. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2002 10:49:09 EST From: ABurrese@aol.com To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Hapkido History book? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hey all Hapkidoin, One of my HKD students is also a TKD red belt, and needs to write a paper/book report for her next TKD test. She wants to do it on the history of HKD. She asked me about references, and I was sort of at a loss, since there really isn't a lot out there. I told her the best would probably be Dr. Kimm's Hapkido II (Maybe Hapkido Bible is the same?). I couldn't recommend GM Myung's since he leaves the fact that Dojunim Choi was in Japan out of the history section of the one book I have by him. Mark Teschi (sp) could be okay, I'd have to look at it again, I forget just what he had in his history section. Scott Shaw, from what I remember reading standing in the book store, seemed to have an okay history section in his little book, and I think it was probably as accurate as any of the others out there. I just have a problem with him on other accounts, such as the titles section of his book, and that he now apparently was found out to not have the rank he claimed, and all mention of the Federation he used to have at his web site is gone. I don't remember GM Han or that book by Robert Spears having much if any history in them. What am I missing? Recomendations for her? Comments on any of the sources above? Other sources? Thank you very much! Having been a student of both camps (WTF & ITF), I found the following paragraph particularly interesting because it is true and I just never paid much attention to the differences. "South Korean practitioners in a match wear head-gear, trunk protectors and groin guards, Their North Korean counterparts, however, don't wear them, but instead wear gloves and shoes, developed for contest purposes, with which they hit the face of their adversaries." The one point I would beg to differ is that groin cups were mandatory in all sparring matches under the North Korean (ITF) rules I trained with. This was in Malaysia in the late 80's. Face/head hitting was allowed under ITF rules and without head-gear... oww! (Yes, personal experience. Err.. the details are fuzzy... :-) ) I think head-gear should be required and direct face attacks disallowed because I've seen 10-year olds with bloody faces in tournaments. Sounds like the sparring we did in Tang Soo Do. Then the Jhoon Rhee safety equipment came out and we began to use that. Lets have fun! Concerning the ITF-style, does that mean that NK TKD is better than the SK style? It makes more sense to me to train in battle consition rather than train as if it was a sporting event in high school. What is your take on this y'all?
