We study tonfa, si, knife, sword, staff and nunchaku. We are trying to think of a name for the class now. Does anyone have any suggestions for names? The name doesn't necessarily have to mean "Weapons Class". It could be something more general like "Bushido". Is there a Korean translation for something like "Bushido"? Thanks for your help, Nick. ----------------------------- Nick McKenna 1st Dan Johnson's Tang Soo Do http://www.johnsonskarate.com *************************************************************** The contents of this Email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom it is addressed. Hey, Ray--- We no girl-ly men. Whats a few brain cells lost among friends! And if full contact to the head can prove the superiority of totalitarian communist policies over the effete self-indulgence of the capitalist running dogs of the West, so much the better, yes? Gawd, how I miss the 60-s. :-) Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Bruce.Sims@med.va.gov To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 08:12:43 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Book stuff Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Alain: How many times do I have to tell you parents not to do your kids homework for them!! :-) All kidding aside, I am glad to hear that people still require students to do some original research on their own, and your young lady's selection of the history of Hapkido will pretty much guarentee that she will earn her grade. There are not many resources out there that give a full and clear history of the Hapkido arts. I would very definitely use Dr. Kimms' work as a foundation for her paper. His material is probably the most objective and balanced of any that has been published. I also agree with your assessment of GM Myungs' book. He is a consummate technician, but still reports that GM Choi developed his Hapkido material after a retreat into the mountains in Korea which is, of course, at odds with what even GM Choi had to report. The problem is that all of the histories lean heavily on the Japanese influences to the Korean traditions as though nothing existed before 1894. GM Seo, In Sun in his Kuk-Sool book (the one with the red cover) pretty much follows the "company line" tracing that style of Hapkido back to the HwaRang (naturally). What needs to be filled in is that period following the Mongol invasion up to 1910. GM Seo does reference some resources but I don't think any of them are translated into English (except for Lee's MU YEI TOBO TONG JI). GM Lees' 3-vol. set on HWARANGDO has some nice war stories but thats about all. Personally I think the 3-issue interview with GM Lee in BLACK BELT magazine (Oct, Nov, Dec 2000) shed more light on the development of that style of Hapkido than his books. There are other projects in the works by both GM Seo and Dr. Kimm but they probably won't be out any time soon. Sorry 'bout that. :-( I also agree with your assessment of what to avoid. Marc Tedeschi creates the impression that M. Rim and Sheya were influential participants in the Hapkido history which means you would have to include a whole host of other wannabees as well. Give me a break. While you are at it you might as well toss Shaw on the fire, too. Where did he get that stuff he was shoveling in that pulp article on Korean swordsmanship? Does he even have a clue? I did have an opportunity to meet M Spears a few years back. His book is reminiscent of the average Ohara Publ books put out during the late 60-s and early 70-s. It was a time when even a little information was considered a lot. We have moved on quite a ways since then. There is also M Choes' books which are a relatively new comer to the field. Unfortuantely they are pretty much catering to the consuming MA public and don't seem to offer anything in the way of serious treatment of the subject. I can't even recommend MY books as I have avoided the entire subject of historical development, defering to individuals of Dr. Kimms stature as a native and scholar on the subject of Korean MT. For what its worth. I also assume that it means head and face are legal targets. Sounds like my kind of sparring. Do it most every class. I think it is a shame that insurance and liability concerns have are continuing to reduce the number of weapons that are used in point sparring and the allowable targets. I think self defense skills in a lot of tournament oriented schools suffer because of it. Think how different sparring in most schools is now, about 20-25 years after sweeps, leg kicks and groin kicks were eliminated. Sounds like the sparring we did in Tang Soo Do. Then the Jhoon Rhee safety equipment came out and we began to use that. That's what it took me after starting TKD classes convinced me I had to stop. I hadn't even been a smoker all THAT long... only 3 years following a divorce, but I was as addicted as anybody else. I just kept doing it again until it took. And while I was in the throes of withdrawal those damn little yellow smiley faces looked an awful lot like bulls-eyes.
