For the past several years I have been searching for information on a Master Nam Jae Woo, or Jae Woo Nam, or most commonly referred to by his students as Jae Woo. Master Nam moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas area from Korea in late 1962 and remained there until 1976 when he then moved to Seattle, Washington. Master Nam came from the Chung Do Kwan. He died while actually teaching a Tae Kwon Do class sometime in the late '80s. I was hoping someone who subscribes to this digest might have some more information on him. I am a 3rd Dan under the International Tae Kwon Do Association and have a dojang in West Virginia if anyone would like to correspond about information regarding the ITA, West Virginia Tae Kwon Do, or really, anything at all. Thank you and have a great day. As a historian, I have to expand upon this. If we only read history written by primary sources (ie. people who were there when it happened), then we wouldn't have history. Each generation has to take what the previous has written, appraise it and sift for the quality of evidence, and keep what is useful. There is simply too much evidence out there for a single person to master it all. For example, Dr. Kimm wasn't around when Yong-sul Choi came back from Japan, so why is what he writes useful? Answer: because Dr. Kimm has gone around and talked to a TON of masters, sifted through their evidence, and come up with his own synthesis. I agree that Dr. Kimm's Hapkido Bible is one of the greatest resources out there, but I could argue that it also shows Dr. Kimm's own biases and limitations. His biases? He is connected with GM Suh and GM Ji, and he listens to their story more than others. His limitations? He is able to interview Korean masters because he is Korean and speaks the language and has improved access, BUT that also means he must follow a Confucian code of behavior and not bite the hand that feeds him. It is kind of like being the official historian of NASA or being the leading biographer of Lincoln. If a historian is in that position, he is probably not going to paint his subject in a bad light; it would be like cutting his own throat. Lastly, since I'm one of those chaps who is writing history about the days before I was born, I ought to mention that the history of hapkido is pretty darn murky. It is MUCH more rewarding to go do research on the Fugitive Slave Law or even bareknuckle boxing than to try to learn about the origins of most of the Asian martial arts. This is because: 1. You really should know the language before you write a history. 2. Asian martial artists often view their history as part of the secret of their art, to be imparted only to top students. (view it as a form of espionage -- why would they want to let their opponent know how they think?) 3. The marketing of the martial arts rests upon the myth that a 2,000 year old technique is better than one that Joe Blow used in a street fight last week. So the last question is: Why do I still do it????!? Because I think it is important to know why one is training, and to me part of the answer to that question lays in the ways the art has developed and why. Still, I keep waiting for Dr. Kimm to finish that big history of the Korean martial arts that he promised us back in 1995! :) Yours in the arts, Dakin Burdick burdickd@indiana.edu --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] RE: The_Dojang digest, Vol 9 #50 - 10 msgs To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2002 8:14:17 PST Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Whoops, there is another one with a bad subject... My mother just started Tai Chi at 61. She's taking a class at her local YMCA, but the video she's been using to help is "Tai Chi for Health" with Terence Dunn. It' a beginning level, Yang Long form video. The instruction is pretty good and paced well for a beginner. Good luck to her! Tang Soo! The doc. told him that there is a tendon that runs under the heel and that he (my friend) had bruised or tore the tendon. If it was tore the only solution was surgery. Just a thought as to your woes. mmd --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Tai Chi Video To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 04 Feb 2002 19:17:12 PST Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > 61. Not that great in the realm of Tai Chi as a martial art, but good for Tai Chi has a moving meditation. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "Kenneth W. I had problems with heel spurs. The way that I was able to alleviate the pain was to stretch out the calf and to take a hard ball (golf ball works great) and roll it around under your foot. This stretches out the muscles underneath the foot. Worked wonders for me. Next thing pertains to Mr. Hancocks comments about the split of MDK. How many of the members have been in a situation where the master you were studying under quit, retired, or expired (to put it politically correct). The reason is that my master recently had surgery, at first it was thought to be worse than it turned out to be, thank goodness. But I know that there are 2 factions in my school. My instructor is on one side and most of the other instructors are on the other. I hope to not be forced to choose because it will be a very tough decision. I would just like to hear other peoples experiences.
