Maybe if I hear it from fellow martial artists, I'll have more will power to quit. Tell me your story. Thanks in advance :o) Dizzy >> Dizzy, I quit about 11 years ago after having smoked for about twenty years. I used the patch...you still needed a prescription to get it. I had a couple strong incentives. ONE; I was coughing like some of the old winos who hung out in my alley. TWO; My mom was diagnosed with throat cancer. The main tip I have for anyone is this: If you quit and then decide at some point to "just take a couple puffs" from a cigarette, then you have started smoking again. Even if you don't go out and buy a pack, you will have at the back of your mind that you "got away with just having a few puffs." So at some point...maybe a week or two in the future...when you get another craving, it will be "all right" to take a few puffs because it was OK before. I've heard of those freaks who can smoke a cigarette every now and then, but I was never like that... I smoked a lot. So I knew not to fool myself into thinking that I could just smoke a bit here and there. The fact that I quit drinking a few years before I quit smoking, made things easier, but that's a whole other story. Two weeks ago I finally went to the podiatrist who diagnosed it as an inflamed nerve. He gave me a cortisone shot and it hasn't hurt since. The point is that I was asking others what their experience was and no-one had the right answer. Go seek professional medical help if it doesn't clear up on its own in a reasonable time. Otherwise the standard for for help is RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) with ibuprofen to reduce inflamation. "..... It just makes me scratch my head when these folks want to debate or try to invalidate what people like Doju Nim Ji or Dr. He Young Kimm says...." I have to tell you Mike, that what you are describing is a valid part of the investigation process. Where Dr. Kimm is concerned I have fewer complaints about his reports because he seems to have done a much better job documenting and supporting his statements. I hold GM Ji, or Myung, or Lee or any of the other personalities in the Hapkido arts to the same standard. However, my experience is that their reports don't hold up as well to close scrutiny. Now, one of the confounding issues here, is something that Dakin mentioned in his post-- that to inquire into a MA leaders statements is tantamount to a challenge to their authority or worse, a personal affront to their integrity. I think that many times people take some pretty outlandish positions presented by KMT authorities as gospel simply because to express curiousity about those positions seems insulting or disloyal. The result is that you have people writing books presenting TSD (GM Kang Uk Lee) or TKD (Son Duk So) as traditional Korean arts to include the kata of Okinawan derivation. I think the MA community deserves better than that. Now, I will add something here that I think was skimmed-over in both your response and in Dakins'. There is a rather large population of the MA community that likes its truths presented in a particular light and bespeaking a particular line of reasoning. For example, it has long been discounted that Chinese MA did not start with the Shaolin Temple and that Bodhidarma did not invent Chuan-Fa or Chinese boxing. That does not keep people from shamelessly republishing this material time and again. Nor will you get most Japanese nationals to own that the Yamato people and the line of Japanese emperors owe their origins to Korean ex-pats of the Shilla and Paekche kingdoms who emigrated to the islands about 300 to 600ad. Remember what happened when I suggested that anyone other than Yong Sul Choi could have brought DRAJJ, ju-jutsu, or Chin-Na to Korea and contributed to the development of the Hapkido arts? Dakin, I too, have been waiting for Dr. Kimms' book on KMT history. However, I think we need to take a deep breath and realize that if Dr. Kimm has really done his job, and done it well, his report will be an honest, unvarnished presentation of the facts rather than a validation of one particular version of history over another. The Instructor uses the ITF approved pattern but follows the WTF standard of sparring. It is bizarre because I thought the dojang is affiliated with WTF. Am I > making too much of a deal over this matter? Perhaps... IMHO this is one of the significant diffs between the Kukkiwon affiliated schools and the ITF and perhaps also the ATA schools. It seems that pretty much where ever you go, the syllabus is standard in ITF and ATA and ?? schools. In the ITF this is probably due to it being headed by a former military man. However this just isn't the case with WTF/Kukkiwon dojangs. Yes, there are the accepted poomse, etc, but there is a lot of variation since no one is visiting your school to see exactly what and how you are teaching. This is both a pro and a con. This is just one of the reasons I push back on generalizations indicating that -all- WTF/Kukkiwon schools are [insert description here]. It differs. And, yes, that can be seen as bad or good, depending I guess on whether one is pro-KukkiTKD or anti-KukkiTKD. Other views?
