Freehill" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Smoking Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I quit smoking on December 20th, but I just got off the patch six days ago. The patch worked very well for me. I started on the 21 mg, down to 14 mg, and then 7 mg, in two or three week intervals. The patch helps take off the edge, but you really must want to quit, not want stop smoking, but to want to QUIT smoking for good. In fact, as I write this email my brain is telling me to have a cigarette, but I know this craving will pass, and many more will come and pass as long as I stay strong and focussed. Also, the patch gave me a slight rash some days, so I would rotate everyday and find a new place to put it on my body. This rotation seemed to help, and now the rash is gone and I am not smoking. I think it was worth it. thanks, John, Bahrain jd_freehill@yahoo.com Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! I just can't find them. Any and all help would be appreciated as I am tired of using Japanese names in a Korean art. It just seems wrong to me. To summerize; what did Choi call all of those Aikijutsu moves he learned from Takeda?? Thanks in advance everyone!....." As best I know there is no uniform or standard nomeclature for identifying Hapkido techniques. In fact, I know of no standard curriculum for Hapkido techniques. Some folks use a simple numbering system, others use labels which speak to the biomechanic involved, and still others just use a mnemonic label based on some image associated with the technique to help students remember it easier. I agree that it is not a good thing to be using the nomenclature of another art, or culture to identify Korean material, but until such time as there is some sort of standardization, I'll stick with English terms to communicate with English-speaking students. From: Eui Bin Lee, USTU Referee Chairman Re: After extensive discussion at the USTU National Referee Seminar, held on January 27, 2002, the following is further clarification on the Head Contact rule. _________________________________________________________________ New Head Contact Rule Ages 6-11 years old Sparring competitors, age 6-11 years old, may not make head contact at any time during a USTU competition. A competitor, who executes a technique to the head area, will be subject to one of the following actions: - Any technique, contacted to the head area but does not make any injury, will be given a warning by the referee (Kyong-go) - Any technique, which makes injury with the head area will result in a one-point deduction by the referee (Gamjeom) - If the competitor cannot continue because of the injury with the head area, the attacker will be disqualified - Inability to continue competition because of fright, crying or loss of will following the kick to the head area which didn't cause injury, does not constitute grounds for disqualification of the attacker The new Head Contact Rule will be in effect at all USTU Sanctioned Events for age 6-11 year olds, excluding the 2002 U.S. Open International Taekwondo Championship in Orlando, Florida. _________________________________________________________________________ You may now download the USTU Nationals Packet from the USTU website. _________________________________________________________________________ Referees - register to referee at USTU Nationals in Detroit May 22nd-26th online - www.ustu.org/refereeform1.shtml. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 13:05:06 -0800 (PST) From: sam saenz To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] W.T.F. vs. I.T.F. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Sam Saenz 1st Dan Kukkiwon certified Until recently, I never knew the ITF existed. I received my 1st Dan back in 1985 at the age of sixteen. It took me four years of hard work and sweat. Our instructor, at the time, was an 8th Dan Kukkiwon certified. He never told us about ITF. He never told us the origin of Tae Kwon Do. He would only tell us that the W.T.F. was established in 1973, and that Kukkiwon was the way to get certified. I left one year later to join a Kung-Fu school for about six years. I have not been in the martial arts scene until September of last year, when I started teaching. I am teaching Tae Kwon Do. I am working out again and teaching at the same time. My instructor is now Master Troy Smith from Texas. I am very excited about teaching and learning Tae Kwon Do, as it is my first art. I like the I.T.F. style because it emphasizes more on tradition and not on Olympic style sparring. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy my training under W.T.F. I just wish that the W.T.F. instructors would acknowledge I.T.F. and that it does in fact exist. I know not all W.T.F. instructors are like that, but I hope that all of us open our minds more often about other martial arts no matter what the style or system. As far as Tae Kwon Do is concerned, I believe we are all brothers and we should help each other out. Networking is what its all about. We can learn something from each other. However, I have several students who are former ITF members and I don`t have any problem with them doing their forms. I did ITF myself for a couple of years and still enjoy doing Ge-Baek or Kwang-Gae (I even did it on open tornaments more than once). If they want to grade with this pattern that`s OK with me as well. We also host a technical tournament each year where both systems are allowed and we really have a good mixture of WTF and ITF stylists, plus very close scores! Our ITF brothers/sisters cannot even teach the WTF forms in their schools (as additional material) w/o fear of being kicked out of the ITF (or at least it has happened in the past). Unfortunately there are hard feelings on both sides of this issue. Given that, many would probably just not bring it up.
