Many of the terms refer to numbered sequences or positions, or vague terms like 'mountain storm' etc. I use techniques from a variety of MAs in my program. Check out some of Judo Gene LeBell's books...they have excellent descriptions of techniques. My command of Asian languages is limited. I know the names of the techniques, but with my decidedly american accent, and the fact I am not a native speaker, I feel my pronunciation could be in error and may actually insult someone...lol. For my own edification, I learned the asian words, but I don't force students to do the same...most do eventually, but it is their initiative. Hubbard Expresses Strong Support for Sunshine Policy February 6, 2002 U.S. Ambassador to Korea Thomas Hubbard told ruling party lawmakers on Wednesday (Feb. 6) that the United States "strongly supports" the South Korean government's sunshine policy of engaging North Korea. Refuting the reportedly simmering disputes over North Korea policy, Amb. Hubbard made it clear that the Bush administration supports the comprehensive engagement policy toward the North. Hubbard's remarks drew keen attention as it came at a time when South Korea and the U.S. are showing some differences over their policy toward North Korea after U.S. President George W. Bush described North Korea as part of an "axis of evil" along with Iraq and Iran. "We respect the Korean government's stance in dealing with North Korea, including the sunshine policy," Amb Hubbard told Reps. Kim Geun-tae, Shin Gi-nam and Lim Jong-seok of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), when they visited him at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. Hubbard said America's willingness to have dialogue with North Korea has not changed at all, despite the increasing diplomatic row between the two nations. He indicated that recent developments do not necessarily mean the U.S. is changing its policies toward the Korean peninsula, although many Korean people seem to be worried about that possibility. With regard to the reports about his recent controversial remarks, he insisted that he never attempted to disregard President Kim Dae-jung's call for the U.S. to help North Korea "save face." Touching upon Rep. Kim Geun-tae's statement on alleged U.S. support for former dictatorial regimes in Korea during a speech at the National Assembly on behalf of the MDP chairman, Hubbard said, "The U.S. has not engaged in the setup of such regimes and has not backed them." However, he expressed regret that the U.S. has failed to play a further role in enhancing Korean democracy. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 19:09:29 -0600 From: DDODGE2 To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Quit Smoking Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I quit smoking on Friday June 13th of last year. I also used the patch and found it helped a great deal. I went from 3 packs a day to nothing and without the patch I don't think I could have pulled it off. As several people have said you do have to be committed to quitting completely or even the patch won't help. I also had my 3 children looking over my shoulder constantly to help me stay focused on quitting. I also quit drinking on the same day and have been sober since. I turned all my vice's into a strong habit of TKD, HKD, and weightlifting so in a way I still have addictions but now I'm addicted to staying in good health. Good Luck to everyone out there who is trying to put down the "Cancer Sticks". Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Here is a copy of my original reply: You won't find direct translations for such Japanese techniques such as ikkyo, nikyo, etc. after all they only mean technique #1, #2, etc. In hapkido you will normally find catalog of techniques names. such as jiabsul (pressure points), etc. Hapkido is not aikido but if you are looking for specific categories just send me an email or visit the introduction to hapkido section of my website. At the bottom I list a few categories. Hope this helps. As far as books. I am not a big fan of his history section and his pictures are to small for these old eyes, but Mark Tedeschi's hapkido book has a very good section on this subject. Jere R. Any questions just ask. Ray's registration will be framed and posted for everyone to see and enjoy. I think that I will be teaching ki techniques and Master Timmerman will be teaching cane techniques (there will be about 15 instructors), and if this knee does not quit acting up I may need to use my cane for more than to get on an airplane early. Master Hodder and I will both be teaching limping techniques. :) Maps are posted on www.hapkido.com. Jere R.
