I'm still quite busy so I'll not be able to write series of long letters at the moment. So if there's anything you'd like me to post on, could you keep your letters short and please just one question pr mail? (hi Bruce, hehe ;-) Bruce: >> GM Lees' 3-vol. set on HWARANGDO has some nice war stories but thats about all. Personally I think the 3-issue interview with GM Lee in BLACK BELT magazine (Oct, Nov, Dec 2000) shed more light on the development of that style of Hapkido than his books. << Sure, GM Lee did not speak that much English back when they wrote the books, which is why there are several mistakes in the text. He speaks English much better now, and the articles are much more detailed. They are all three online at http://www.hwarangdo.com/Magazines/00s.htm The "founder" page (http://www.hwarangdo.com/hrd2.htm) is also very nice and the people making Korean MA history charts should take a look at this: http://www.allmartialarts.com/KIXCO/History/history/map.htm Carsten Jorgensen cj@hwarangdo.dk Copenhagen, Denmark -- _______________________________________________ Win a ski trip! http://www.nowcode.com/register.asp?affiliate=1net2phone3a --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Carsten Jorgensen" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 23:21:03 +0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Questions regarding GM Yong Ki Song Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net A Hapkido style in 1944! Heh, that's pretty early :-) When did Morihei Ueshiba start using the Aikido name – before or after 2.WW? >>GM Yong Ki Song was an original student of Yool Sul's founder GM Choi. (An old photograph featuring him training with GM Choi was featured in a past article of Black Belt magazine a few years or so ago). GM Song is the founder of HanMuKwan Hapkido (1944) and it was officially recognized as a Hapkido Kwan in 1966. << Anyway, GM Choi was teaching in Korea after the war, so 1944 sounds a little early. Or maybe the name refers to Aikido, just as Tangsodo and Kongsodo means Karate? Do you know if GM Song also trained in Japan? Carsten Jorgensen cj@hwarangdo.dk Who is convinced there were no styles in Korea who used the Hapkido name until ~1960 when GM Kang Moon-Ji first used the name in Taegu. And that it wasn't until 1961 that more styles started using the name. -- _______________________________________________ Win a ski trip! http://www.nowcode.com/register.asp?affiliate=1net2phone3a --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Carsten Jorgensen" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 23:24:37 +0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Identifying Hapkido Terms Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Brian: >>".....I also know there were older Jujitsu (or Yawara) names for these moves. I just can't find them. Any and all help would be appreciated as I am tired of using Japanese names in a Korean art. << Bruce: >> As best I know there is no uniform or standard nomeclature for identifying Hapkido techniques. In fact, I know of no standard curriculum for Hapkido techniques. Some folks use a simple numbering system, others use labels which speak to the biomechanic involved, and still others just use a mnemonic label based on some image associated with the technique to help students remember it easier. << Me: There is no standard for identifying Hapkido techniques, no standard curriculum for Hapkido techniques, no standard for anything - And that's because Hapkido never was - and never will be - *A* style. >From the very beginning (~1960) when people started using the Hapkido name in Korea, "Hapkido" was used as a generic term for very different styles. Well, no, it simply fractured after being created by Gm Ji. See my earlier comment about Korean martial artists and their multitude of organizations. HRD is one of those groups that splinter off from Yawara and HKD. Just as Gm Ji enhanced Gm Choi's Yawara to create HKD. >Who is convinced there were no styles in Korea who used the Hapkido name >until ~ 1960 when GM Kang Moon-Ji first used the name in Taegu. Ummm, no one??? :) Gm Ji coined that name in 1959. Should we just agree to disagree? :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 11:53:04 -0500 From: Brian Beach To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Hankido - Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> As it happens there is a chance I' will be in Amsterdam sometime in March, it will probably be after the 15th I'd love to stop by the Dojang and see some techniques, even if I'm going to miss master Ko Back Yong. I've reviewed it a few times before, but still good to go back a read through it again. But you must admit, it is a bit difficult to trust it -too- much after reviewing just the very top two lines. But still, a good site and worth bookmarking. Yes, I am the type to be "overly fond of precision" as Kerry put it. And thank you Maafa for not "ripping me a new one" as that does sound painful! I train in one of 16 schools in South Western PA and there have been approximately 160-200 students promoted to cho-dan this past year, my husband and son promoted in the spring group and I tested this past fall. Actually, my class mate standing next to me laughingly said I should become a female wrestler with that name. And yes, my first name is mis-pronounced all the time. Bobbea - pronounced Bobbie A.K.A. Boddea - pronounced Body?? Hey, maybe the person that set the letters for the embroidery on my belt was dyslexic. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. --__--__-- Message: 9 Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 12:37:10 -0800 (PST) From: Sun Mu Kwan-USA To: Dojang digest Subject: [The_Dojang] Hankido techniques Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net When I first started learning hapkido, my instructor at the time mixed poor hankido techniques with kuk sool won hyung's and called it purely unique Master Shin's one of a kind hapkido. Little did I know what good hankido technique looks like until I traveled to Korea with my mother and found the source of hankido. At least I got the chance to learn the basic kuk sool won hyung's which I really enjoy and practice often. ===== International HKD Federation-Sun Mu Kwan USA www.ushankido.org Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo!
