Apparently there are a number of differing interpretations of Korguryo history and the text of the stela only adds to the conflict. Obviously historical interpretation is never immune from political motives, but my question is whose interpretation is most plausible? Here they are: 1) Japanese historians say that the stela confirms Japanese chronicles that say that a proto-Japanese people called the Wa crossed from Japan and occupied part of southern Korea. 2) Chinese interpretation that Korguryo was not really a Korean culture anyway, and that ethnically its people were more closely related to other Northeastern Asians (like Manchus?). 3) A South Korean interpretation says that Wa invaded Korguryo then Korguryo fought back and then Paekche allied itself with Wa and annexed Silla. 4) The North Koreans say that the Wa people were actually Koreans living in Japan, so if they invaded Korea it was just one Korean group occupying part of the peninsula. It's been my experience that the Japanese interpretation gets written up in more Western history books and that the South Korean interpretation does not have much of a following except in South Korea. ===== International HKD Federation-Sun Mu Kwan USA www.ushankido.org Got something to say? I just opened a Han Mu Do School and it is growing. My question to all is this. What do you require/expect from students with diabilities. I realize that all people have limitations although they are generally less than we imagine. This paticular student only had 1 kidney. He is not allowed to play contact sports. He does play baseball with some sort of brace. Physically he is in good shape, which is no big suprize considering that he is only 8, but Han Mu Do involves so much falling that I just do not know what to do. He is really intrested in MAs and is doing well. He has been attending ever since my school opened (about 2weeks) and I was only informed of his condition today. I could teach him Tang Soo Do but to be honest I enjoy the throwing and falling, well just the whole curriculum of Han Mu Do so much more. This would also require having him come to personal classes. Sorry for rambling so much on my first post but I really don't know what to do. My instructor's school is closed today and I will not see him until after I have another class. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 14:54:07 -0500 From: "Rudy Timmerman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Stances Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Andrew writes: > GM In Sun Seo stances are much wider and deeper than GM In Hyuk Suh. Hello Andrew: IMHO, stances can be viewed as lifting weights (your own body weight). Some lifters lift more weight than others. Stances, as I see it, are nothing more than a tool to achieve stronger (and more flexible) legs, and they are often used as an individual might use free weights. Some use light weights and lots of reps, others go for lots of weight and low reps. In my school, I teach low stances to promote the stretching of the Gastrocnemius, Hamstrings etc. We also use narrow stances to promote balance and ease of turning. Yet, because of my age and a medical condition, I personally use much higher stances than I would like to. Nevertheless, I continue to promote low stances in our style, but it would never be seen that way if anyone looked at me. Similarly, I don't think it is a correct assumption that Kuk Sool, as taught by GM Suh, promotes high stances. Stances could depend on your personal abilities (age does tend to limit low stances), your body type, and/or personal preference. For example, the heir to the Kuk Sool Won throne, Suh Sung Jin, uses very low stances, and his present Instructor is his father Suh In Hyuk who uses much higher stances. Stances really have very little to do with style or the way we fight. Comparing GM's Suh and Seo may just be an indication that GM Seo is still very much is into practicing for himself. I could not help but notice that GM Suh did much less of that in the past few decades. That is bound to make a hughe difference. To be sure, GM Suh is still a phenominal martial artist, but he is not quite as active on the mat as his younger brother and that is bound to affect stances. We hate to admit it, but sometimes we must tell our students "do as I say, not as I do", in the meantime, I'll keep trying to do as I say. I find myself doing more and more of this as time goes by:) Two cents on the origin or use of Gum Moo Hyung. As I was taught it, Gum Moo Hyung tanslates to "sword dance form". The form was used by Korean martial artists to keep the use of the sword alive, because using the real thing was banned by occupying forces. The form does not use a sword, yet it contains the name. Perhaps we can compare it to the way Brazillians used their martial art as a dance. On Kicho Hyung. In the late sixties and early seventies, when our certificates stated Kuk Sool Won Hap Ki Do, this form contained numbers 1-2-3-4-6, and number five was added later. I have in fact, some 8mm film footage of the old Masters performing the hyung that way. I think Mr. Garland is an incredible martial artist and is unbelievably talented in many martial arts,, he is a fine addition to the Sin Moo family as far as I know and I welcome him. I think that everyone that has actually been on the mat with Doju Nim Ji would "assume" and I know the ramifications that this word holds,, that the man that will take over would be Yung T. Freda,, he is actually Doju Nim Ji's oldest student in the U.S. and is quite an incredible martial artist and person, Sin Moo is much more than just the physical side of Hapkido and there is a very large body of meditation and esoteric beliefs and practices that would have to be passed down with the physical side of Hapkido, in my opinion Sin Moo Hapkido's meditational and belief system is the closest thing I've seen to Ninjutsu since I moved on from that fine art,, Master Yung T. Freda embodies these qualities and I know that he is much more than a martial artist, trust me, he totally practices what he preaches, being around him is more than just being around a martial artist. I have also seen Doju Nim Ji around him and I have seen the affection that he genuinely has for Master Yung. That is my opinion anyway having actually worked out with Master Yung. Now I am not saying that other people wouldn't be great torch bearers someday, there are a few that could do a fine job,, including Master Rick Nabors who I've seen for quite a few years now. I know that if that torch were passed to him some unfortunate day at the end of Doju Nim's days,,which I don't really even want to think about.. that he would steer Sin Moo in the right direction and keep it safe from the powers that be. But who knows,, Sin Moo Hapkido exists in the heart and souls of those who actually practice it,, and I don't mean just at the seminars but during those long practice hours when know one is around watching and you are just burning a sweat trying to get the basics as perfect as you can,, or when you are alone in a room doing Sin Moo meditation at 2 o'clock in the morning while everyone else is asleep,, these are the times and places you become one with Sin Moo and REALLY understand it,, I know the true followers of Sin Moo know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. (ITF) under the Presidency of Master Choi Jung Hwa VIII Dan, duly elected on the 12th January 2002 at its inaugural congress meeting held at the Hilton Hotel in Vienna, will be at the following address: ITF Suite 400 37 George Street North Brampton Ontario L6X 1R5 Telephone: 001905 4579996 Fax: 001905 4579143 Email: ITFHQ@itf-information.com Website: http://www.itf-information.com We ask that you do not confuse this office and the organization it represents with that of the North Korean outlet in Vienna that bears the same name. Please address all enquiries and correspondence to the Secretary General Master Volmir Ligay VII Dan. While all attempts will be made to expedite response to your letters and communications, we would ask that patience be exercised as this office is being set up from scratch and as such will, as with any pioneer venture, encounter teething problems. Rest assured that under its President Master Choi Jung Hwa, this ITF will continue to operate and dispense Taekwon-Do, undiluted in all its aspects with the maintenance of the status quo with regards to name, logo, doboks, certification, status cards, international championships, seminars, gradings and most important, curriculum as per Taekwon-Do's Founder General Choi Hong Hi. In a nutshell, all ITF practitioners should feel quite at ease in this rejuvenated environment. We ask that the already 'converted' begin immediately to avail themselves of this 'members' service and that those 'doubters' make the all important step of committing themselves to not only securing their future but also that of the ITF.
