Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I recently acquired both the Muye Dobo Tongji book and the Muye Eship Saban Videos (interoperation of the Muye Dobo Tongji forms) I have my own opinion on these, but I was wondering about everyone else's on these items first. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net It all depends upon the school. I study Taekwondo in Dallas under Master Howard Lee. We have some students that are disrespectful, but these tend to be the youngest students in the class. All of the older students (15 and above) have a deep respect for each other, regardless of rank. My fiancee (who was recently promoted to lower white belt) was chosen to show two new students their first form. Master Lee would not have chosen her unless he trusted her abilities. Once again, it depends upon the school and the instructors to instill this respect. If they fail to do so, then the parents should take the younger students away from the school. Walt Morrison Over the years I have noticed that people in the West who study the martial arts are more likely to defame others who are of lower rank who may disagree with them. I think that people who reach high ranks should act as models for those who have less experience and not lower themselves by exhibiting pettiness. I don't think that the founders of martial styles would go around defaming others but would lead by example. Korean martial arts are tied to Confucian values which speak of the bonds between seniors and juniors. In all cases, the virtue of exemplary behavior is cherished. So why doesn't this transfer to the West? --__--__-- Message: 4 From: ABurrese@aol.com Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 09:45:14 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Streetfighting Essentials review Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Here is a review I received from a martial artist in the UK I believe: STREETFIGHTING ESSENTIALS - Videos 1 and 2 by Alain Burrese I always enjoy watching videos by Alain Burrese because he understands what he is talking about and can explain it very clearly. He also avoids saying how wonderful his style is and how terrible every one else's is! In both his videos on "Streetfighting Essentials", Alain selects effective boxing, hapkido and grappling moves which can be applied to the unlimited violence of streetfighting. The first video gives a very clear explanation of why footwork is important. It describes the most useful boxing and other hand techniques for the street. The targets for each technique are explained in a way which makes sense. Useful kicks for the street are described next. In the second video, Alain shows how to deal with grabs, chokes and locks as quickly as possible. Again his explanations are very clear. He gives an excellent plotted course on how to fall down without injuring yourself. A section on simple but effective takedowns follows. These can be used on the street. His section on kicking from the ground is brief but outstanding. I can recommend these two videos without reservation. They are ideal for anyone who wants to protect themselves on the street. Instructors, also, can learn a lot about how to explain techniques and their applications in a very clear way which makes sense. I look forward to Alain's next videos. I personally think it helps the learning process and the students can see that the weapon can be used in the same manner as empty hand techniques.
