Hello, I had a student with only one kidney last year until his family was transferred. He was able to do learn and do fall with a rib and kidney protector on, this was a recommendation from his doctor. His doctor actually thought learning how to fall so he wouldn't get hurt was a great idea. He also spent a lot more time developing falling skills in the seated and kneeling positions and only did light falls with select advanced students in techniques after about eight months. I actually spent quite a few private lessons working on all the little details of falling to make it safe as possible. He was able to fully participate in the program with small modifications such as using select advanced students instead of peer for techniques with falls and basic sparring. This way falls were very controlled in techniques and just a light touch was used for contact in sparring with him. From what I understand he is still practicing Kuk Sool where they were transferred to. I am also the father of a young girl with many disabilities and another without any. I plan to start training my girls as soon as they are ready. All too often parents are too protective of their children and this becomes even greater when the child has disabilities. The benefits of Han Mu Do far out way most potential problems. I would talk with the parents and the young man and explain that most of the low falls and rolls should not present any injuries. Kicks, punches and wrist locks should not be any problem either. Take the kid at his own pace, just as any other student. If he or his parents don't feel comfortable with aerials focus on rolls just as any other student. His parents signed him up he must want to learn, it is up to you to see how far this young man can go. Nor is there much Asian stuff. I was completely surprised. First time there and I thought it was very similar to LA. At least its much cleaner. ===== International HKD Federation-Sun Mu Kwan USA www.ushankido.org Yahoo!
