I asked some friends that operate gyms in Incheon, Seoul, and Busan and I was given the same answer. They all said Hwa Rang Do is not popular here in Korea, although, they have a few gyms here and there similar to KSW. I wonder why it is not practiced much in Korea. ===== International HKD Federation-Sun Mu Kwan USA www.ushankido.org Yahoo! Try blindfolding sometimes:) The way we look at forms is strictly as a training tool, and we use them in every imaginable manner. In fact, we look at technique training with partners as a two (or more) man form....." Just a quick follow-up question. Now that you are more-or-less independent do you stick exclusively to those hyung that you were taught when you were with your teacher? Do you ever "import" Chinese Forms which approximate Kuk Sool biomechanics? Praying Mantis, Long Fist, and 18 Lohan supposedly were great contributors to Korean stylings; do you ever investigate those arts to seek out similarities with the hyung that you perform? Are any of the hyung that you do NOT constructed by GM Seo? Are the sword hyung constructed by GM Seo or are those re-interpretations of some other stylings (Ie. Northern Shaolin saber)? I guess if I was going to open the door on hyung, I might as well open it up a ways, yes? :-) Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Jim Griffin" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 15:25:31 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Marine Corp Martial Arts- Demo in Columbus Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Speaking of the Arnold Battle of Columbus, if you show up Friday afternoon, you can cheer for Mike as he performs his cool Kali self-defense routine in the afternoon competition. I only hope he can get his ham-handed attackers to pretend they aren't totally clumsy (note - I'm one of the three ham-handed ones). If you can stick around until Saturday afternoon, you can also watch me get my head kicked off in TKD sparring. Come one, come all - bring the kids! Bring a medic, just in case. :-) Seriously, it ought to be tons of fun. --- begin quoted message --- Message: 3 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: SCARBRM@Nationwide.com Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 10:30:52 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Marine Corp Martial Arts- Demo in Columbus Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Tuhon Bill McGrath mentioned the new Marine Corp martial art program. I am looking for information on a hyung called "Little Moon" that was taught by a Master Jae Woo Nam in the Southwest Tae Kwon Do Association from 1962 to 1976. I have submitted to this digest once before and recieved one reply from one of Master Keith Yates' students about Master Nam but have not heard anymore. Here is a brief description of the hyung Little Moon as taught to me. It highly resembles Chonji of the Chang Han patterns. There are still 19 moves like Chonji but for each count there are two movements: Step 1: Turn to the left into a left front stance and execute a left down block, then immediately execute a left high block (Same arm) Step 2: Execute a high right front kick and land into a right front stance and execute a right middle punch. Step 3: Turn 180 degrees to the right and execute a right down down block, them immediately execute a right high block. Step 4: Execute a high left front kick and land into a left front stance and execute a left middle punch. (The first 8 steps are done in the same PLUS(+) pattern as Chonji) Step 9: Turn to the left 90 degrees into a left backstance and execute a left outside block, then immediately execute a right inside block across the body without moving stance. Step 10: Execute a high right front kick and land into a right front stance and execute a right middle punch. Step 11: Turn to the right 180 degrees into a right backstance and execute a right outside block, then immediately execute a left inside block across the body without moving the stance. Step 12: Execute a high left front kick and land into a left front stance and execute a left middle punch. (Step 9 - 19 are also done in the same PLUS(+) pattern as Chonji). I hope this hyung rings a bell with someone. Thank you all. Forwarded message: The following article appeared in the February 4, 2002 issue of the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper (Rochester, NY). .... INJURY SPURS BILL TO CERTIFY MARTIAL ARTS TEACHERS The Associated Press ALBANY - The hospitalization of an ex-Green Beret karate student has prompted one state legislator to propose licensing of martial arts instructors. Assemblyman Robert Straniere considers regulating martial arts a commonsense necessity. Since the sport involves "using the body as a lethal weapon," he said, regulation is the only way to ensure safety. "We license people who do fingernails. Why not license these instructors?" said the Staten Island Republican. Though the bill has spurred little interest among lawmakers since Straniere introduced it last March, its opponents are prepared for battle. Martial arts instructors say the bill is an unnecessary restraint on business freedom. They wonder how outsiders would evaluate such a varied and complicated field. "How can they certify us if they don't understand what it's all about?" said Greg Scheurer, manager and instructor at Central New York Karate and Kobudo in Syracuse. More than 1,680 martial arts schools operate across New York - about 14 percent of the nation's total. Only California has more schools, according to the Clearwater, Fla.-based National Association of Professional Martial Artists. "In martial arts, there are tons of different styles. Two Tae Kwon Do schools on the same street could have two different curriculums," said Rob Colasanti, NAPMA's vice president. Matt Dorsey, director of Martial Arts America in Rochester, worries primarily about the bill's vagueness. The two-sentence bill directs the state education commissioner to license martial arts instructors and develop the "rules and regulations necessary for such purpose." Straniere said he is intentionally letting someone else decide the specifics. He put that burden on the Education Department, he said, because many martial arts students are children. "I feel the legislature is not in a position to say what the standards should be," Straniere said. That is precisely Dorsey's point. He will travel to Albany with members of the Libertarian Party on Feb. 12 t meet with legislators to present signatures of people who oppose the bill. "We call for the separation of sports and state," said Richard Cooper, the Libertarian Party's state chairman. The bill stems from the October 1999 injury of David Fusco, now 42. During a class demonstration, instructor Frank Barone Jr. punched the two-month karate student, breaking several of his ribs and puncturing his lungs, said Fusco. The accountant said the injuries left him in critical condition for eight days. A grand jury decided not to indict Barone on assault charges, citing a lack of criminal intent. Barone, a 33-year old black belt, according to his Web site, did not respond to requests for comment. His AVK Karate school - a NAPMA member - still operates on Staten Island. Fusco and Barone are now suing each other in civil court. Fusco said he did not ask Straniere to propose licensing for instructors, though he said it is a great idea. "At least when you do something wrong, you can lose your license. If karate guys had to have a license, they might think a little bit more about their actions," said Fusco. "If you lose your license, you lose your livelihood." --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang It's a great day for Taekwondo!
