Many "splinter" NGB's have similar one steps for example Pan Am TSD's are almost identical to the "old" WTSDA ones. GM Shin, Jae Chul has published a book on "sparring" which includes the 90 numbered techniques to test for 1st Dan 30 Kick-steps, 30-hand one steps, and 30 ho shin sul. I don't know of any other TSD org that has a published set of one steps but Master Mac might?...." Help out a non-tkd person, would you? Am I given to believe from these last few posts on 0ne-steps that particular styles or organizations within the TKD/TSD community have organized, discrete sets of one-step responses? I had seen folks do one-step sparring before, and at the beginning the techniques were taught in a particular order to facilitate remembering the techniques. However, I had concluded that with time and profficiency the techniques were executed spontaneously and in no particular order. Has anyone checked around to see if this is actually the best way to teach such material? Several years ago I remember individuals coming back from the 1st Foriegn instructor's course saying Kukkiwpn policy had changed and 4th dans and above could recommend people to their own dan ranks. The Kukkiwon newsletter (came in today) still states one dan higher for examiner. My question. Has any regular Kukkiwon dan recommenders ever "routinely" recommended people [successfully] for dan promotion to their same rank? Just curious. Also, anyone have a current E-mail address for the Kukkiwon International Division? Thanks. Given it is for Overseas Business, someone -might- answer that can speak a at least bit of English. ??? Also, the Kukkiwon's URL is http://www.kukkiwon.or.kr/eng/main.asp (for the English page). It took me an additional year to turn them back into feminine looking gams. Oh and what a brutal chore that was. As for your injury, sounds like you are suffering from a case of underused muscles being worked to hard... Does this mean that I have been a secret practitioner of Hwarangdo but didn't know it? Great, that's another style I can add to the list (no longer have to search for a Hwarangdo dojang too). Unfortunately, when I recently had an opportunity to return to that dojang, I found it under new management teaching Shinmoo Hapkido. Anthony gave a long reflection on his experiences of the sport of dojang spotting in Seoul. I agree with his comments and would like to add that obscure arts such as yudo, Kyong Dang, Taekkyon, Sip pal gi, etc are taught on the campus by enthusiastic students. Professional instructors, on the other hand, are trying to make a living from the art so dojangs are often near middle or high schools. The foundation, established in 1992 by Shin Yong-ho, founder and honorary chairman of Kyobo Life Insurance Co., has supported the translation of Korean literary works and their publication overseas. The foundation will receive applications until May 31 for the translation of Korean poetry, fiction or drama. The foundation has a list of works recommended for translation selected by an advisory committee, and the applicants are also advised to translate prize-winning works from the 9th Daesan Literary Awards : Lee Song-bu's "Mt. Chiri," Hwang Suk-young's "The Guest," (excluding English and French) and Lee Gun-sam's "Magnificent Escape." The translation should be a team effort including at least one Korean and one native speaker of the target language, the spokesman said. Winners of the grant will be notified individually in August and they can receive 15 million won per project. "As the grants are given to three or four projects in each language, the total number of projects to receive grants will reach 13, more or less," he said. For further information, call the foundation at 82-2-725-5420 or visit its Web site, http://www.daesan.org. --__--__-- Message: 11 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 17:28:44 PST Subject: [The_Dojang] Handsome wimps Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Be careful Ray, if you annoy Carsten any more he might sue you for libel! > (not sure if that would be before or after Master West has dealt with > you....) Taekkyon (2 tapes), from Turtle Press (http://www.turtlepress.com) Very good, especially if you are unfamilar with the traditional Korean art of Taekkyon. The steps, kicks, forms and training methods of Taekkyon are covered. The one thing that I did not care for was they would show a long form and then replay it all over again with the title "Follow Along". I figure I can use the rewind on the remote if I want to watch the same material again. The tapes are very well produced and esp worth purchasing if you are interested in but have not seen Taekkyon. The 65 Throws of Kodokan Judo, from the US Martial Arts Association (http://mararts.org). This is Phil Porter's organization. In 5 volumes. Also, The Counters of Kodokan Judo, from the same person and place. 8 vols in 5 tapes. These tapes have been around for a long time (~15 years?), the quality of the production is not tremendous, but the material in them is excellent. IMHO, Porter does an excellent job in teaching the fine points of each technique or concept. You can watch the throw or the counter, but he has a way of describing the motion or the movement so that you go "Ahhh!". The 65 Throws tapes are each about an hour in length. The Counters tapes are each about 2 hours in length. Lots of good material.
