The Korean and Japanese sword arts do have many similarities. Not because Japan had some brotherly relationship with Korea and just wanted to teach them martial arts. But because they were exchanging blows on the battlefields. A technique that almost took your life is easy to remember. Master Lang left the USTF (and the ITF) about 4 years ago, starting his own group, Yom Chi. Master Griffin was awarded his 7th Dan Master this last fall. Yom Chi (and Master Lang) rejoined the ITF a few months back. Master Lang and company have choose to follow Choi Hong Hi's son, Choi Jung Hwa during the current split. Ah, such interesting times. Fine but how do you trademark a front kick, roundhouse kick, sidekick, etc. No offense implied to anyone, just curious. ===== International HKD Federation-Sun Mu Kwan USA www.ushankido.org Yahoo! From the numerous gripes I have heard about alterations and permutatuions of the various arts which our listmates study I guess I understand why. The answer will probably disappoint those who do not live in Korea or who do not have a legitimate instructor. I doubt that's much different in other arts. In Korea, the Federation has instituted a "Train the Trainer" program which requires instructors to come together several times a month and get on the same page. At the nationwide Festival in 2000 it became screamingly apparent that individual interpretations of the forms had led to slight alterations in forms throughout different regions. A series of meetings were held to make the most of this evolution, keeping the wheat and discarding the chaff. Then the training program was begun to get everyone doing one version of the forms. For some of us this has meant learning multiple versions of the same form to appease masters who are not entirly keen on the new versions. Personally, I like that but it really annoys my wife. Ha! Outside of Korea... well. Who knows. I guess that would depend on the instructor's facility with the Korean language and the legitimacy of their training. It would be ludicrous to suggest otherwise. (Yes, I do agree that they were influenced by Japanese sword arts). In return, we must remember that the reverse would also be true. In fact, you cannot have one without the other. The MYDBTG is quite explicit on the point of where sword techniques were coming from - much more honest than what you will hear from people today. As for sword design, comparing the swords of different nations by appearance or apparant design is going to take a person in the wrong direction. As for modern swords, well... Korean sword smiths are making what people want to buy. People want to buy Katanas. Most smiths though do seem to keep the basics of Korean swords true: longer handles, shallower curvature. All of this is again visible in the MYDBTG in the section comparing Chinese, Korean and Japanese sabre class weapons.
