I recently asked some questions about why certain weapons are taught in Hapkido and I got some great answers. Unlike other newsgroups and MA lists this one stays civil. So... thanks to Ray for provided the Dojang to all of us. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Terry" Just a short note to Carsten and others... You may ask why I give Carsten such a hard time about Gm Dr. JB Lee and HwaRang Do. Simple... We get a ton of great info from him when someone (and I'm not hesitant to play the bad-guy) pushes his buttons. Yes? If I take it too far, I try to remember to apologize. Sometimes I remember, perhaps sometimes I forget. But you must admit, once -we- get Carsten going we get a lot of very useful references out of him about Gm Lee's fine art of Hwarang Do and the historical events of the MAs in 1960s Korea. Under US law, you can theoretically trademark kicks and punches. What the US Patent and Trademark Office would probably require you to do is prove that (a) it is unique and a signature move of the style, (b) nobody else uses it, and (c) it clearly identifies the style to the exclusion of all other martial arts. Chances are a tm application for that would never get through the examiner - though you don't have to register a trademark with the USPTO to have one. Not seeing the tape, what I think they ment was that (a) the material on the tape was copyrighted and (b) the term Hwa Rang Do is trademarked (Reg. No. 1925956). Joel Martin McTague, Esq. "A normal class generally runs for one hour with 30 minutes of free practice afterward. In Korea, classes are held 6 days a week and attendance is expected at all classes." What happens if you consistently don't make all the classes? Do they kick you out of the dojang? Use you for sword practice? Just not promote you thru the ranks? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Next weekend we will all be in Jackson! If you go to my website, under 'pictures' you will see a group photo of this event from several years ago. You can also go to http://www.geocities.com/hapkiyukwonsul/MVC-020.jpg. Last year this event was so big we could not take a group picture. The September 2000 issue of taekwondo times had a picture of all the instructors. These days, we usually just take a picture of all the instructors Saturday evening as the size of the whole group is just to large now for a group picture (unless you have any ideas!). However, this year we also need to take a picture of all DD members so Ray and others (including myself) can post this picture on our websites. That way you can see who you are talking to. Bring your cameras! I am looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting many new ones this year. For those that are going for the first time, class will be held at Master West's dojang on Friday and Sunday. (He has separate dressing and restrooms for black belts and colored belts). Saturday's classes will be held at the hotel. 3 classes at once to choose from! Saturday will begin with a demo of all the instructors and end with Master West presenting attendance certificates, special awards, and whatever he wants to do (I am glad I am not Ray).:) We will be dinning Saturday night Jackson style (Master West has a restaurant opened just for us that is not open to the public). If you should have any questions about next weekend just send me an email I will be glad to give you an answer. Jere R. There must be some Eastern philosophy in all of this. "What you seek is right under your nose" or something like that. Chris...could you please send me your email addy? For some reason your post had my email as your return. You've been really helpful and inspiring when I've worked with you in class. Hello Anthony. I'll be the first one to admit that my knowledge about swordmaking history may not be as detailed as some on this list. Even at that, I dare say that your statement above was as true centuries ago as it is today. When a sword is a tool to help you stay alive, or obtain what you want, it would be reasonable to think that serious swordsmen of ANY nation would own a custom made sword. If this were out of his financial reach, the swordsman who valued his life would surely still seek out a sword that best suits his personal skills and preferences of combat. Many Korean style martial artists think that Korean swords MUST be straight to be authentic. With even a little research, you can soon find that this is not so. There are distinct advantages/disadvantages to the particular curvature of the blade. Some blades lend themselves more to thrusting, and others more to cutting. Personal preference as to length or curve of the blade would surely supercede any National pride the owner might have.
