What prompted so many to come here? I'm interested in seeing what others have to say... But I'd say at least two things. One, a simple desire for a better life for themselves and their family. Seoul and much of Korea was pretty much destroyed during the Korean War. Even 10 or 15 years later things were pretty rough in Seoul. e.g. JI Han-jae recently mentioned that he fairly recently returned to Seoul & Korea after being gone for ~25 years. He could not believe how much things had changed. Seoul is now a very large and very modern city. But 30 and 40 years ago some students were training in dojangs with dirt floors, or so I understand. 2nd IMO is the creation of the ITF in March 1966. After Major General Choi was forced to resign as the President of the KTA he was encouraged to help TKD by finding ways to export it to the world. This greatly encouraged and allowed many TKD instructors to leave Korea for the greener pastures of the USA, Europe, etc. Along this same vein, Major General Choi sent many (~700) Oh Do Kwan instructors to S. Vietnam during the Vietnam war. The first ones apparently in December 1962. Obviously many of these Koreans met American servicemen, like list member Master JR West, and perhaps became even more interested in coming to the USA. Comments? Other thoughts? Personally, Michael, I wish to hell that he would! In fact, I will go you one better and say that I wish all of these organizations such as the HwaRangdo, Kuk Sool Won, ITF, WTF and so forth would identify members in good standing. As aHapkido practitioner I get very tired of folks casually advertising that they teach Hapkido along with Karate, auto mechanics and underwater-basket-weaving. :-) I think Ihave also had my fill ofpeople who had a weekend with GM Choi, Yong Sul and then advertise that they "studied under" him or were his "student" or even his successor! We have the technology here in the Internetto put this information right out there for all the world to see. Why not do it? Its a pretty good book although its written in Korean. Very interesting material. Pros/cons of each? BTW, don't make the mistake of going to discipline.com instead of the one for the shoes... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com> Response: Last night I used the discipline shoes in an Eskrima/Arnis lesson. I was learnin how to do tricks with sticks. Or as they said in that Van Damme movie, "He is the American who does tricks with bricks." We started off with 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 counts. Kopo-Kopo, then stick disarms, and free hands coupled with foot work. In one of the disarms, my instructor took away my stick and put me into a joint lock. I had no weapon so I reached for my discipline shoe and pulled it off and whacked him in the head. Conclusion: Not only a good piece of foot gear, but the Perfect Weapon sans Jeff Speakman. Yahoo! I have the entire set. Bought them because they were advertised as being tapes from Master Rim, but actually Master Joe Sheya does all the teaching on them. They are ok, I guess, but not at all what I was expecting to receive.
