When the Japanese took over the country, their martial arts came with them. After the end of World War II and the Chinese Revolution, Korean arts began mixing Japanese styles with the Chinese methods taught by Chinese refugees....." I have mounted this soapbox so many times I don't want to tax people with it again. What you are pointing out, though, is the foundation for a great deal of what I have been poking around for the last couple of years. 1.) WW II (Potsdam Conf) and the Korean War didn't just split the country but split the culture as well. Way too much of the Korean Martial traditions and their history have been focused on in-put of Japanese traditions owing to the Occupation. 2.) I would bet that the KMT of N Korea would be significantly different from the South, strikingly similar to Chinese traditions and much more representative of the Korean traditions as a whole than their Southern counterparts. 3.) I continue to wonder how it is that the Chinese influence continues to receive so little attention especially with the vast period of time during which Korea and China enjoyed close relations. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net << This also got me into trouble for being disrepectful, a real no no at our dojang. I eventually began to bite my lip and now try to respect her as a black belt, but inside, I respect other lower ranking students in the class more than I do her >> First, I don't want anyone to take this as a verbal lashing, but... My greatest instructor (my Mom) always told me: "Give respect where respect is due." The underlying meaning is that you fail to show respect for yourself by disrespecting your seniors, even if they are less capable than you. Every person you encounter during the course of your training has something to teach you. From the sheer determination of a 'white belt' to the dedication of a Sa Bom Nim...You stand to learn a great deal from ALL who you train with. Technique is not the only aspect of training. What about character? Perhaps the lesson hidden in having this 'false' BB in the DoJang is to teach you about SELF-RESPECT. If you really believe that she is a phony, then strive to be the best you can be and don't let her lack of sincerity bother you and distract you from becoming the best student you can be. Truthfully, teaching is one of the best ways to learn... I am awfully curious though...Does she act like a snot or does this person genuinely want to learn the material? --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 11:37:22 -0800 (PST) From: Sun Mu Kwan-USA To: Dojang digest Subject: [The_Dojang] Jeffrey A. I am learning as much from this gentleman as he is learning from me. He is patient, eager to learn and fully respects the differences that appear on a continuos basis between his old art and TSD. Although he certainly out ranks me in many areas, he shows me complete and utter respect while I teach him the ways of TSD. This man is truly the epitome of a MARTIAL ARTIST. He is as capable MENTALLY as he is PHYSICALLY. Will he be promoted more quickly than the other students? Perhaps, but there is certainly no "fast advancement" demanded. --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "Richard Hackworth" <> To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 19:44:23 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Getting Tossed Out Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dave, actually it was a Shotokan instructor. I mistyped it thinking about an incident with a local TKD instructor. I am not saying that they are good reasons for not publishing Dan records. I wish that they would. I think that more organizations would stick to their promotion requirements if they had to claim by name everyone that they promoted. I like Bruce's idea about it being an organizational website. That would make it easy to update and keep current. It is also more cost effective than publishing a book with the listings.  Richard Hackworth --__--__-- Message: 11 From: "Richard Hackworth" <> To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 19:47:12 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Dan Listings and such Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Since the topic of Dan directories and listings came up I thought that a directory of National and World Champions would be a great idea. We have at least 4000 Former Korean National Champions teaching in this country if you believe the yellow page ads. Not to mention all the one's who taught US Army Special Forces members in Vietnam. Richard Hackworth --__--__-- Message: 12 From: JSaportajr@aol.com Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002 20:28:59 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Juan Moreno Sparring Seminar Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am pleased to announce an Olympic Sparring Seminar with Juan Miguel Moreno at Carrasco Taekwondo, 850 Highland Ave, Needham Massachusetts, Saturday, March 9 from 10AM to 4PM. Juan Moreno is a three time Olympian and two time Olympic Silver Medalist. He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful Taekwondo player in history. On a personal note, I have attended seminars by Juan Moreno and he is one of the best teachers and probably the most skillful and motivation communicator I have met in the martial arts. I have a friend who is a sport psychologist who came with me to watch one of Juan's workshop, and he said that Juan was the most brilliant communicator in athletics that he has seen. I highly recommend this seminar. If you are interested you may email me or call 781-455-8184. I`ve had a number of students with different ranks from other schools / systems joining our club. They were mostly ITF style students (we do predominantly WTF), but not only: recently a very young Kyokushinkai practictioner decided to join us. He`s got a 6th Kyu, some experience in his style. He works out with students ranging from 7th to 3rd Kup and he can do what he chooses: to test for each belt from white upwards or just wait until he will be ready to test for 5th Kup. It`s up to him. The good point is that we are afilliated not only with the WTF body, but also with two independent groups. It really costs a lot of money to have your grade confirmed by the national WTF association - if you have e.g. 1st Kup ITF, you have to pay all the fees up to 1st Kup WTF if you want your grade confirmed. Some decide to stay with us but don`t test in the WTF and it`s also OK with me. Some still do the Tuls and I don`t have a problem with that as well (I did them myself for a couple of years). One even became my assistant instructor and passed his 1st Dan in our school. We are a rather unorthodox school... -- Piotr Bernat dantaekwondo@lublin.home.pl http://www.taekwondo.prv.pl --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang It's a great day for Taekwondo!
