Since my knowledge of swords is quite limited, I wanted to know what is the best way to clean and or oil the blade. ===== International HKD Federation-Sun Mu Kwan USA www.ushankido.org Yahoo! I don't mean a "strip-mall," I mean an actual mall. If you had one or are currently in one, what have been your experiences...both good and bad? Any information about your experiences would be appreciated. Reason being, I have four other partners. We had an opportunity to get a 2,500 SF space in a local mall for $4.16 per SF plus utilities. This equates to $600 monthly plus the utilities . Other similar sized space elsewhere in our county runs between $2,000 - $4,500 per month. The mall lost some stores and seemed eager to fill the space, perhaps anticipating that we might bring in a lot of kids whose families would probably spend money at the mall while waiting for classes to be over. Believe me when I tell you I really had to work this situation to get the offer! Keep in mind that it's not the best or biggest mall locally, but a mall nonetheless. The price was extremely reasonable (as reflected above) and appeared to be a good business decision. Unfortunately, three partners didn't like the idea for various reasons (younger men in their early to mid 20's), while my other partner and I (both 41) could see the value and potential of such a location. We've currently been operating p/t in a local health club with a limited schedule, little room for growth, and they take half the tuition. Sorry to ramble...just a little disappointed in my young friends' lack of open mindedness and vision. Any responses would be appreciated. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Piotr Bernat To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 03 Mar 2002 11:25:13 +0200 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Two ITFs? As I watched this black belt practice I saw how good he > really was and what an asset he was going to be to our school. I remember how surprised I was at the moment when I saw a guy of my age, wearing ITF dobok and a 1st Kup belt, coming into my dojang and saying: "Good evening sir, my name is...., I teach Taekwondo program in a local secondary school, and I would like to join your school". This way I got one of the most dedicated students I ever had, plus an assistant instructor and couple of months later a new black belt. He is really an example to the students who are less than half of his age. And it really took me some weeks before I made him not to call me "Sir" even privately... ;) Best regards -- Piotr Bernat dantaekwondo@lublin.home.pl http://www.taekwondo.prv.pl --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Chosondo@aol.com Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2002 14:03:32 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: The_Dojang digest, Vol 9 #120 - 9 msgs Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have been absent from the list for quite a few months and I am happy to be back. I once got a virtual @$$ kicking because of a statement I made about thinking that an 18 month black belt program was ludicrous...I certainly did not mean to offend anyone. Communication often lacks A LOT when not accompanied by physical human expression... I probably would have reacted in a similar manner to an insincere person. I respect the people I train with because of the effort they put in, not the lack of it. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2002 19:34:50 -0600 From: "Bruce Sims" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: MA in North Korea. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "....However, I don't think the North Koreans are that willing to allow their native MA to be brought out to the world, assuming they still exist. Since the end of W.W.II, the North Koreans have been subjected to a Stalin-type cult of personality, all based around Kim IL Sung. To them, he was a God, and his word was Law. The question would be, would he allow MA to continue in his country without massive overview and micro-control? I doubt there's very many public dojangs in the North even now, in this day of "enlightenment." History taught in the North would have been alter to fit Kim's view, and anything to contradict that would either be destroyed or put somewhere out of sight. So it's not a matter of have only the South Korean view -- there may not be a North Korean view left that isn't skewed and twisted into something that bears even less truth then the South's version...." Just to pursue this, does anyone know of a country here in the west that maintains an embassy with the PRNK? I am wondering if its possible to at least get a few basic questions answered, perhaps through a cultural attache'. I remember a very interesting post some months back that related a report of an intrusion into SK by NK infiltrators seemingly very well trained in MA. I think I understood that the art they practiced was a relatively new development of the NK army. All the same I am sure it must have had SOME foundation in a MT of that country. I bet there are enough folks on this Net who have ideas about how one could go about this. Don't tell me nobody is remotely curious about this. :-) Thoughts? Plus many many excellent instructors from around the world. Simply a wonderful time. More later once I return home. But bottom line, a great bunch of people, great times on and off the mat. Highly recommended! Warning to Mississippi... I'll be back, again and again... Many on the list know in addition to Tang Soo Do, I enjoy joint manipulations and weapons as part of the "fight in all ranges" philosophy. This weekend should satisfy my curiosity for the next six months (until the August Seminar). Started the weekend with special session by Master McHenry (6th Dan TSD) and Master Hodder (7th Dan TKD) just to get us kick-punch guys comfy :-) Then off to speed takedowns with GM West (Good reason to make Friday's sessions). The weekend is never complete without Master Booth's humour and I learned alot about his modified dan bong. Add to Weapons GM Timmerman with rope techniques and some good fine points to think about and apply to my HKD skills. I had so much fun doing GM West's Military Techniques with Alain Burrese I ended up with an autographed copy of his no-nonsense book. Now as a long time TSD/TKD player I must admit my ground skills are my weakest range so off to Master Lyon's Session on ground fighting and submission holds, leaving me a lot more comfortable on the ground, and I can see I'll wan't to pickup some more from Master Lyon's in August. On the personal side, I got to meet Master Ray Terry in person and GM West's loyal mutants were ever ready with dining suggestions, directions, help and large doses of southern hospitality. So I look forward to seeing you all soon. In a few years I may even qualify for GM West's Blackbelt only session (I'm only a 3rd gup in HKD). Guess I'll try to get some sleep until my newborn daughter's next feeding, then a lite nap before back to my day job :-( Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards Moja Kwan TSD Yahoo!
