The Event will be for 4 days at the end of October 2002; participation costs (room, food and tuition) are very sharp (USD225 for early birds), with a great venue (a 4 star beach resort!). Malysian Residents may be eligible for some reductions. I shall be the main Instuctor, with the primary topic HKD (or at least my interpertation of it). Follow on vacations or stays can be easily arranged, and the dollar goes a very long way here. Letters of Participation will be provided to all. For further information, kindly visit either www.jlim.net or www.geocities.com/jlim50480/index.html . Regards and God Bless, Julian S. LIM (jlim@jlim.net) (8th Dan KHA, 8th Dan KTA Yahoo! Bugei trading, Swordstore, Ishi Yama web sites. I would recomend that you do this soon because there is nothing that can ruin a blade quicker than not keeping it cleaned and oiled. Take care Todd --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 07:11:41 -0600 From: "Bruce Sims" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Sword Maintanence stuff Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "....This afternoon after practice, I noticed that the blade on one of my swords is quite dirty. Since my knowledge of swords is quite limited, I wanted to know what is the best way to clean and or oil the blade....." I'll give you two answers. The first one is the quick and simple one. Soak a paper towel in ammonia and wipe down the blade thoroughly, always stroking from guard to tip in long smooth strokes. Use a second dry towel to clean off any excess ammonia and dry. Use a light oil to finish. Do not use metal polishes, metal cleaners or abasives (IE. Brillo pads, plastic scouring pads, plastic or bristle brushes). I mention this last point because some blades are shipped with a kind of sticky coating which resists standard cleaning and the immediate temptation is to use something abrasive to take that coating off. Be patient and do it the slower-- right-- way. The second approach uses a sword cleaning kit (BUGEI trading Co.; about $50US.). Using the rice paper supplied in the kit wipe down the blade to remove debis and surface dirt. Powder the blade and wipe clean as many times as is needed to remove accumulated grime. Oil blade with the high-grade oil supplied in kit and sheath. My personal experience is that it is better to use a "stepped-up cleaning program" over a number of cleanings rather than attempt to get the blade spic&span all at one cleaning. I also recommend that sword owners treat every blade as though it was a hand-forged heirloom. I press this whether the blade that you have is an antique masterpiece or a $100 stainless steel wrench from the local MA supplier. There is a level of respect in ones' deportment that is cultivated by treating every sword as though it is an instrument by which one lives. In some ways, it can be. BTW: I liked your presentation on HANKIDO. How do you want to be listed under GM Myong. Currently I have Rick Nabors listed under GM Myong with a mention of Sin Mu Hapkido. If you have trained solely under GM Myong that simplifies things. If you trained under one of GM Myongs' students it would be helpful to have that information as well. I personally think it's a great idea. My first teacher had his school right by one of the enterances of the mall. It was like "free advertizing" just being by the door. People would walk in the mall, and that would be the first place they see. People would stop and watch class (good thing for the big glass windows cause there was always a crowd outside the school). But, it's unfortunate that this teacher I talked about was not a nice teacher (he lost that school). But for a "normal" and "real" martial arts instructor, like yourself, I personally think it's a great idea. Go for it. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Chereecharmello@aol.com Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 11:00:28 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: The_Dojang digest, Vol 9 #121 - 9 msgs Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net << Has anybody ever had a dojang in their local mall? >> No, but I think that exposure is everthing and a mall location sounds like the ideal place to open a dojang IF you are planning on catering to teenagers. For more information visit http://www.aautaekwondo.org In This Issue: *Chris Canning Award of Excellence *AAU Team Ready for Puerto Rico *AAU Tournaments & Events Schedule *Chris Canning Award of Excellence In December, the sport committee of AAU Taekwondo announced the adoption of the "Chris Canning Award of Excellence." As was stated, this award would be presented during the opening ceremonies of the Youth and Adult National Taekwondo Championships held in Greensboro, North Carolina on July 4, 2002. The award will be given to one martial artist, with the rank of 1st degree Black Belt or above, within the AAU Taekwondo organization who has demonstrated the competitive spirit, athletic accomplishments and personal attributes set as standards of the award. In conjunction with the presentation of this trophy will be the awarding of a $1,000 dollar scholarship to the recipient for further martial arts training or higher education. It is important that all clubs submitting candidates for consideration do so on the application sent to them this month. The applications are to be submitted to Art Canning at 239 N. Wood St., Maroa, Illinois 61756. Mr. Canning is the individual responsible for selecting the winner and must receive the applications during the month of May but no later than 6/1/02. Any submittals not post marked prior to that date will not be considered. Submittals should include the completed application and/or a resume of the individual's martial arts accomplishments, a letter documenting his/her involvement in school and community activities, and some listing of how the individual has demonstrated some of the personal attributes required--dedication, modesty, competitive spirit, courage, and helping other martial artists. All these attributes and accomplishments will determine the recipient. In order that your students are given the full opportunity to prepare themselves for possible consideration, it is suggested that you make a copy of this newsletter and post on the club bulletin board. All submittals will be considered, but the recipient will be kept confidential until the actual presentation. *AAU Team Ready for Puerto Rico The AAU Taekwondo Team is departing Wednesday, March 6, for tournament competition in Puerto Rico.
