Thanks Tang Soo jg. dean sr --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Wed, 06 Mar 2002 14:33:41 -0500 From: "Rudy Timmerman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Getting on the mat Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Jere recently posted a thread about one (or some) participants who attended the recent seminar Master West held in Jackson. His concern deals with people of higher rank moving with less grace than he expected. He further observed that participation on the mat by these same folks is limited. While I am not sure of whom he speaks, I can relate to these issues on a personal basis. Rank takes into consideration a certain amount of time spent training. The higher the rank, the more time one must have spent doing this. Unfortunately, this bring along with it the inevitable aging process we all face. Combine this with past injuries, and we have a perfect example of how this problem may have come about. >From personal experience, my motion is more severely affected in the earlier part of the day, and I loosen up somewhat in the later part of the day. I cringe each time when I see that a demonstration is scheduled for the morning, because I already know that this will affect anything I can do. Nevertheless, I participate to the best of my ability, and I am comfortable enough about myself that this no longer bothers me. I just do it, because getting on the mat is what it is all about. Another reason for lack of graceful motion may be related to the style. We cannot overlook the fact that some Korean styles simply do not move the way we do in the circular Korean arts. This does not mean that they have trained less por deserve less rank. It just means we are different. As I listen to Master West's speach, he welcome ALL. Therefore, we must be tolerant to differences in such things as motion. The mere fact that they were there is enough to offer support. One of the most memorable experiences I took away from Master West's seminar is that the folks who attended were not affected by perceived incompetence due to lack of graceful movement. I was especially touched by one of my fellow presenters who lent me a helping hand to get up off the floor -- I believe it was Master Hodder, but I am not sure. He could have laughed at me, but instead he supported me in my efforts to train and share. Judging by the number of people who took part in my presentation, most others also appeared not to be bothered by my limitations. Perhaps Master Burrese summed it up best in the notation he made in the book I purchased from him. He said: "It was my pleasure to learn from someone with your wisdom, and I look forward to learning more from you in the future." As I looked around me, I saw the same thing over and over again. The martial artists at Master West's seminar are not there to criticize, they come to help. I believe this starts with the Masters at the top, and I applaud Masters West for their efforts to provide eager students of all ranks and styles with such a wonderful event. While some of the limitations Master Hilland addressed might be age, personal ability, or style related, I have also seen a number of high ranking young men who have the idea that knowledge comes via osmosis. These are the people who ride the coattails of those who have done their time on the mat. You can easily recognize them as they line up to have their picture taken standing beside some Master. This is sad! Folks, you don't fool anyone but yourself. Undeserved rank, and pictures of you with people you hold in esteem, only serve to remind you of your shortcomings. My suggestion is to get on the mat with the Masters while they are still around, and learn from them. You will soon enough grow too old to participate, but by that time you may not have reaped some of the wisdom the older Masters may have been able to share with you. Master West's seminar is filled with genuine martial artists and Masters who are willing and able to help you. I never saw one of them turn up their nose at anyone's abilities; instead, to a man they were extremely professional and helpful. Put away your fear of not looking as agile as you'd like to, and get on the mat with the folks who CAN make a difference in the way you look and feel. You will gain more respect with trying than by pretending, and I believe this is what Master Hilland means. Sorry for the long post, but it is worth it if we can get just one more on the floor next year. Ever since Master Jere Hilland told me how great it was that I had to check it out for myself - I haven't missed either the Feb. or Aug. seminars. I got to see and work out with a lot of my old friends and list members Master Rich Hodder (lead the TKD class), Master Charles Richards, Master Geoff Booth to mention a few, including that cut up Jere Hilland. I also had the opportunity to meet some list members whom I've corresponded with. I finally met Mr. Greg Giddins (promoted to 3rd Dan!) who came with his wife Sara and beautiful 6th month old Heather. I met, and trained with and get to know Master Rudy Timmerman, who had already unselfishly shared some of his personal training material with me, and shared his knowledge and expertise freely with everyone at the seminar. I also had the pleasure of training with and getting to know Mr. Alan Burrese and Master Ray Terry. The beauty of JR West's seminars is the diversity of the people and instructors, styles represented, and the camaraderie we all shared. I went from being an instructor to a beginning student, to working with KMA masters to novice students. We were all there to learn and share with each other, and of course have fun. All this was accomplished in the 3 day seminar. JR has many extremely capable instructors and students, and the other guest instructors were excellent and entertaining as well. I hope to see my old friends and the many new ones I made again next time. I know I sure had a fantastic time. Great to be back, but still a bit high from the seminar that ended three days ago. The 16th International Hapkido Seminar hosted by West's HapKiDo Academy in Jackson, Mississippi. Those instructing were Master West (military techniques), Master Rudy Timmerman (rope techniques), Master Rich Hodder (stick fighting), Master Geoff Booth (dan bong), Master Dennis McHenry (hopping kicks), Master Jere Hilland (Ki strikes and throws), Master Perry Lyons (ground techniques), Master Instructor Mike Kuns (combination techniques), Master Instructor Joe Borucki (punch defense), Master Instructor Sexton (seated shiatsu), Master Instructor Mangum (speed takedowns), Master Instructor Tavassoli (kick defense). Also taught were choking techniques, falling techniques, advanced wrist techniques, PaBo Sool, and pressure point attacks. Master West also taught a special session for Hapkido black belts. The seminar began on Friday afternoon, continued all day Saturday and ended on Sunday at 2PM. Mat time was obviously great and filled with various sessions to attend. Each session lasted an hour and each time slot had three different sessions to select from, each session taught twice over the weekend. But as I was saying, the mat time was great, but the down time was just as fun. Drinking a "cold drink" or sharing a meal with Master JR West, Master Renee West, Geoff, Mac, Sharon, Alain, Jeff, Rich, Jere. Sitting on the mat and talking at length with Rudy. Do a little breaking in the parking lot with Rudy and Kevin. Meeting Dr. Kimm (yes, he was in attendance) and Steve for the first time. Getting thrown on my face, several times, by Sara Giddins. Seeing Master Mac (Dennis McHenry) receive his 6th Dan in Tang Soo Do and Greg Giddins receive his 3rd Dan in Tang Soo Do. Congrats!!! Also seeing Master Mac get shot in the head by his daughter (you had to be there). Stretching with Charles. Getting to meet other members of the_dojang like Shawn, Chris, Joe, Rosemary, Thomas, Jimmy, plus several more people that I'm no doubt forgetting right now. I believe that on Saturday there were about 270 people in attendance. Amazing to see so many martial artists all in one LARGE room, having fun, learning, enjoying each other, meeting new people and old friends. No egos. Just learning and sharing. Black belts and Masters pairing up with yellow, green, purple belts. Black belts working with other black belts. HKD, TKD, TSD, etc, all training and learning together. Such a grand time was had that I plan on attending future events hosted in Jackson. Sure would be great to meet/see even more subscribers to the_dojang in Mississippi sometime down the road... Jon, Dakin, Bruce, Rick, Rich, Hal, Carsten, Anthony, Andrew, Mel, Donna, Jack, Javier, Mike, Michael, Ron, Ali, Jeremy, Piotr, Ian, Todd, Dizzy, Kerry, Prince, Paul, WEE, Ramon, Mary, James, Patrick, Gary, Jesse, Glenn, etc... Yes, a long way for some of you, but Master Booth travels all the way from Oz, can't get much further away than that. And a special thank you to the Masters West. I came as a pauper, yet was treated like a prince. Thanks! To the students of West's Hapkido Academy... I hope you realize just how great you have it with an instructor like Master JR West there with you all the time. I'll probably think of more to write later, I'm sure I'm leaving several things out that I wanted to mention. But for now, time to sign off.
