The trip sounded like a blast. I would have loved to go, but the "funds" didn't allow it. I would have loved to meet the DD crew, and had fun on the mat with all of you, specially with Mac (I'd love to watch him do my favorite form, pyung ahn ee dan). What kind of feel / teaching do you get from the Chief Instructor? The only time I have seen multiple black belts with an attitude, it was something that was learned from their Chief / Master Instructor. Just like in the business world, people tend to take on the personalities of their manager. Maybe the same applies? I read through the last couple issues with all the thoughts on the USKMAF seminar, and I have to wholeheartedly agree with all of them! It was an awesome time, and since others have already covered many of the reasons for that, I figure I can just add my little unique experiences to the mix. If there were one thing I could pull out of the whole experience to reflect the character of the weekend it would be the way EVERYONE treated my 6 month old daughter. It was absolutely amazing. I'm still dumbfounded. My wife and I brought her along and crossed our fingers, hoping that most of the participants and instructors would at least tolerate having the baby around. We expected at least one instance of "I can't believe they brought a baby to this!" But what happened is that ALL of the participants and instructors went out of their way to help us with her, some offered to watch her so Sara and I could work out together, (some swept her away without ever giving us a chance to say no!)and she was showered with love and attention all weekend long. We were welcomed into this group of martial artists like we were family, and Heather was the family baby. Never once did we feel like the presence of the baby interfered with anyone or anything, and actually, Heather made twice as many friends as we did! The other guests were wonderful, and Master Wests students and instructors went WAY out of their way to make us feel welcome. I'm not sure how many times a year we can get to Jackkson as a family unit, but if we all can't make it back in August we'll probably just throw Heather on a plane and send her out for the weekend. She seemed to have the best time of us all. And I have no doubt that Lee would be there at the airport waiting to sweep her up in a big hug. It was fantastic. Thanks to everyone there, you made us feel like family from the very first second we walked in the door. Greg 'the guy with the baby' Giddins p.s. Ray, Sara was incredibly impressed with how well a Golden Senior like yourself could still move. ;-) --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 10:48:53 -0600 From: "Bruce Sims" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Certificate Help, please Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ray et al: Need a little help here. (Ref: www.hapkiyusul.com/kys.html ) The page I am citing is a bio of GM Kim, Yun Sang who is reported in the bio to have received "9 grade" from Choi Yiong Sul Dojunim (sic) and there is posted a facsimile' of a Hapkido Association of Korea numbered 275 and dated April 1, 1984. There is posted on the certificate, prominently, the Chinese character for "9" (right above the "1984"). On the English language side of the cert there is only "...(blank) grade of Black Belt, and (very) lovely script in the name of Yong Sul Choi. There is also no date. 1.) Would somebody be willing to examine the Korean language side of the cert to identify who signed the cert, as the signature looks very clean and apparently GM Choi had all he could do to sign his name when he was well. 2.) Does the number in the corner indicate that there are 274 other certificates, 274 other Black Belt certificates, or 274 other 9th degree Black Belt certificates? 2.) Can anyone speak with any authority regarding GM Chois' ability to conduct his affairs for the last two years of his life. I have been given to believe that he was increasingly less involved in teaching and was increasingly absent from the mat albeit sometimes present as a titular presence at functions. Lets not have a range war over this. What I want to be able to do is appreciate credentials when they are presented and know what I am looking. I hear that you are thinking of joining me at the seminar in Erie, PA I'm doing on the March 16 weekend. Perhaps you can bring a little extra "liniment" so we can both dampen the sounds of our groaning joints:) FYI I'll be doing another seminar in Brainerd MN, on the April 6th weekend, and on April 27th weekend I'll be in Detroit, MI (just before taking off to Korea). Love to have some of the folks I met in Jackson join me in the fun. I'll cover anything from the angles in joint locks, to pressure points, to weapons techniques on request. By popular demand, we may also share the value of "KI" breaking techniques. If anyone is interested in attending these workshops, please give me a shout at kwanjang@nkmaa.ca. Sincerely, Rudy National Korean Martial Arts Association --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 08:41:14 -0800 (PST) From: Ken McDonough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Motion cause commotion Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Read the thread on motion as it is applicable to a particular subset of the martial arts, e.g., Hapkido. Indeed, I recall in my earlier days when I was a 2 bit basketball hustler and player. We were always sizing each other up when we went to new territory within the inner sanctum of the playgrounds of the Bronx,Brooklyn,Queens, Manhatten, and Jersey. One guy told me I had more moves than ex-lax when I did my Earl "The Pearl" move with a double spin. No sooner than I laid down my infamous move, when a dude from Harlem pulled a triple spin on me and then my new name was "In the Dust". So, what does this vinyette (sic) have to do with Hapkido motion ? Well, guess when your into a particular sport, hobby, or advocation and your at the top of your game, you make comparisons to see who has got the best moves. In this case, Motion. Or more specifically Hapkido motion. I used to have some good Hapkido/Kul Sool Won motion but I a'int kept up with that art since I moved and so forth. So, now I have been working with an Arnis/Eskrima/Silat instructor who has an excellent lineage with some of the better Eskrima/Silat players in the U.S., Philippines, and Indonesia. This guy eats and breaths the stuff. Guess what ? He goes and checks out other Eskrima/Silat players and compares his motion and knowledge to others of alleged equal rank. Now the Eskrima/Silat motion is much different than Hapkido and I had to learn different moves and grooves. So, if you witnessed me down at the great Master West's seminar you would wonder how the heck I attained rank in Hapkido ? Lets face it. There are those Hapkido players who are at the top of their game. They live and breathe Hapkido, teach it, make a living out of it, and excel in it. Good stuff. Then there are the ham and eggers (like me) who merely dabble in it as a hobby and side line to other worthy endeavors, e.g, muscle cars, work, weight lifting, swimming, and so forth. I appreciate both levels of expertise. And, you know what--I only care about my motion when a guy takes a notion--to screw with me in the street. Then all of it goes out the window and it is party time. That is when I say, "Motion causes Motion", not commotion. Well 4 months to retire from the military after nearly 25 years. Hope I get another job. Thanks for the bandwidth. Another thought provoking comment from the geezer. McD... Try FREE Yahoo! I will be thinking about some of these things I ran up against, e.g., What motion would I use: - Your in a bar sippin' on a margarita and you told some lady your not interested, and she is yellin at u loudly in Tagalog calling you a Cheap Charlie. The Australian bouncer, has a knife by his side and is muscling in on the activity and lookin to throw you out for causing a motion commotion. - Your in a Jeepney past 10pm and three scraggly lookin Filipinos sit next to you and one has a bolo. The other is putting his hands on you rear pants pocket thinking you hid the cash there. - Your in Korea and two Arab guys are following you down an alley cause you insulted one of them (by slappin him on the side of his Taliban head) for pinching your girlfriend on a certain part of the body... I will also be thinking about the motion of my hand on a cold San Miquel as I lift it up and a friend of mine grabs it away... I guess I view motion differently than others. Oh well. Peace, McD... Be that as it may. . . IMHO the solution to those problems that involve big hands and small minds is NOT getting bigger hands with smaller minds involved! >Organizations need to be cared after, monitored and maintained, and that >means time, tedium, paperwork and attention.< Change your word "NEED" to my word "SHOULD" and we are very close to agreement! However, I don't think you mean "NEED" I believe you mean "Government enforced", and with that you and I are in different worlds. Perhaps you have forgotten that the Korean Government regulated TKD and HKD organizations before export to the U.S., everything was harmonious, and above reproach then, neh?
