Does the ITF have a written rule/law wrt this? I realize that this has happened before, so I suspect either it is an unwritten rule, if not a written rule, than one cannot compete outside the org. Seems that orgs that do not want their members to explore the outside world are perhaps concerned that the students/instructors may not return. A more open approach would show more trust in not just the members, but also in the organization. Ray Forwarded message: The Forum of Acta Regioni Coreani in connection with the L.G. collection from Myongji university in Seoul is pleased to invite you to attend the Forum on Friday March 15, 2002, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Myongji University Seoul. The topic of this lecture is "Port Hamilton". The speaker is Robert Neff. 1885-1887 PORT HAMILTON/KOMUNDO In 1885, Britain had decided to occupy Port Hamilton (Komundo), in a move which, it was claimed, would prevent the Russians taking a port on Korea's northeastern coast. The British Navy, on the instructions of the Cabinet, sent three ships to Port Hamilton in April 1885, although at first the British flag was not hoisted over the islands. This took place without any consultation with Korea. Neither were the Chinese or Japanese governments informed, though both considered that this was a matter which directly concerned their interests. However, when there was a reduction in Anglo-Russian tension over Afghanistan in 1886, it was decided to end the occupation. After the forum there will be the opportunity to discuss matters with the speaker and some snacks and drinks. Myongji University is located in Namkajwa dong. How to get there? Take Subway line 3 (the orange line) to Hongje and take bus 74 or bus 440 to Myongji or Take Subway line 2 (the green line) to either Ehwa Women's University or Sinchon. >From both stations you can take bus 50 or 440. From Ehwa Women's University you can also take bus 542. If you come to the University, go to the main building and follow the English signs there. People who go to the university by car are requested to send a confirmation in advance so we can arrange free parking tickets. Billy > Bob pinches Sharon in the wrong place. Sharon, well trained in the arts, > wants none of this. She turns and... > ;-) Sharon, being well-trained, would never let Billy Bob that close. With him being 6'5" of pure muscle, she has noted him long before he gets into threat zone. Also, if she's in Taegu, she's undoubtedly with a group of MA/SD buddies and if Billy Bob is stupid enough to go for it anyway, Sharon and her friends will oblige him with a lesson in respect. But, (to humor Mr. McD), let's assume that for some reason she's alone and there is no way to avoid an altercation. Sharon confronts him verbally, telling him to back off, but he continues to advance, now with obvious intent. She assesses Billy Bob's attitude. "Hmmm, mentally kinda like McD," she decides, thinking of McD's self-description - "I am sittin' here with my belly hanging out of my dirty T-Shirt, chompin' on a greasy cigar in one hand, and a shot of whiskey in another ! That is the attitude and mood I am in." Recognizing that Billy Bob considers his gender, superiority of weight and muscle an unbeatable advantage, and the unlikelihood of him factoring in the possibility of her training, she assumes a non-aggressive stance, body turned, hands up and open. As he moves in with a stupid leer on his face, she surprises him by lunging in, taking advantage of his forward momentum to increase the force of her strike to his trachea, (which she can reach because she's tall), her other hand reorienting his family jewels. As his head snaps back from the throat strike, she smashes the back of his head into the wall of the building behind him. Reeling from the blow, he doubles over due to the pain in his groin, at which point she grabs him driving her knee into his face. Now it's up to him. If he's had enough or is sufficiently disabled, she will leave the area quickly. If he is able to continue a threatening posture, he will probably either get swung or deflected into oncoming traffic or pushed through the building's front window, depending on whether he tries to punch, push, or pull her. After all, we aren't in Kansas anymore. Sharon will sit in her hotel room that night and send an email to her Hapkido instructor. She will tell him how she appreciates him not having made it easy for her because she is female. She will thank him for the pain, the throws, the hard lessons, the emotional pressure, and for teaching her to "go ugly early." Then, smiling, she'll call McD to meet her and her friends at the hotel bar to tell stories and continue the never-ending discussion of "real-life" self-defense vs. traditional martial arts training. :) Sharon --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Sat, 9 Mar 2002 17:41:05 -0800 (PST) From: Prince Loeffler To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Mother's Concern on Kukkiwon Certificates - Update Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net To those of you who has responded to the situation regarding a mother's concern about her inability to pay the money for the Kukkiwon certification, Here's an update: We both agreed that the amount asked to pay was excessive, However I told to think of it as an investment for her son's future in TKD to have a certified First Dan ranking from the kukkiwon. She has decided to scrape some of the money herself and will go ahead and pay for her son to be tested. I will try and hopefully with the DD members in searching for another school in her area. Also another schocking part that she mentioned is that, Now the instructor is insisting that the fee will now be $550.00 for the test. According to her, "Your son will also recieved a First Dan in Hapkido as well".... I wish I could name this instructor...But out of respect to members who might be afiliated to this instructor I will not divulge this info at this time...This is Instructor from Korea who is quite popular in his area and does have a solid affiliation with the Kukkiwon.....I don't know maybe this is perhaps a standard procedure in this particular school. I see that he has a new tape out that covers 'escape' techniques...ie:escaping from attack holds etc. For anyone needing some good direction, the tapes are great. The techniques he shows are a very no-nonsense and uncomplicated appoach to control tactics. They are a good example of what police combatives should be. I can say that I still train using the methods of those styles. I find what works the best for me and stick with it. All of the arts that I have practiced are a part of me and my personal style. Hand to hand offers a huge variation of types of situational application of technique. For example, if sparring in a tournament, I would not use some of the potentially damage causing stuff due to rules and such. When I'm on the job, I also must follow law and proper use of force guidelines. My cross training gives me options to use in both worlds. I can remain in one style (sparring WTF or ITFstyle), or grappling (Olympic or Sport Judo rules), or combine them. I prefer combining them when in actual or scenario situations...because I plan to go home safe after making the arrest...and I like to win! ;-) To answer the question, I don't believe in remaining only in one style. I believe you can have a 'base' art, and successfully add quality techniques to it. He is definately not a poser. He lives in the same town as me and has a CQB Dojang in an old run down lumber yard HQ about 4 miles from my house. It is pretty cool. He is also the "technical director" for the county law enforcement in this area. I know quite a few of the deputy sheriff's in this area and a few of them are my Hapkido and Wrestling students.. they speak very highly of him and they say that he really knows his stuff, especially when it comes to shooting and firearms tactics, he has totally changed their training and gear they use, and from what they tell me it is way better now than before, he came to this part of Florida from the Miami area where he is also thought of quite well,,, I know a few of the locals down there too who have run into him,,, I hope this helps,, I have seen him around town,, this town is very little,, DeLand Florida,, no offense to him but he looks just like what you would expect,, ex marine and obviously a professional knuckledragger,,, Michael Tomlinson _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. --__--__-- Message: 11 Date: Sun, 10 Mar 2002 00:06:21 -0500 From: "Rudy Timmerman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Banned Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Piotr writes: > it was decided to expel following competitors from > the Polish Taekwondo Association, due to their decision to take part in WTF > styled competitions: When will the political BS in martial arts stop????? I didn't get into martial arts for sport (I'm not bashing the sport minded, but it's not for me). I asked one of my instructors today when I was going to learn self defence. He replied "at red belt". What?!?!?!?!?! That's one belt (or two grades before black belt). In TSD, we learned (well the adults anyways) self defence from the beginning. One steps also. Here (TKD) they don't learn even one steps till green belt. What's up with that?
