I printed your advice... For the record, I am SORE but HAPPY. Got the vitamins. I do take in enough protein. I do know, however, that I should replenish my electrolytes more often than I do. My body could also use a few more hours of shuteye than it usually gets as well. I understand the ramifications of 'bad practice.' Believe me, S-L-O-W is my middle name... Um, I think I just insulted myself... After receiving a briefing on defense affairs, President Kim told top military brass, "North Korea is showing signs of restarting dialogue with the U.S. This will likely have a positive influence on inter-Korean dialogue." He also observed that talks between Japan and North Korea seem to be on the way. "I think this improved outlook follows U.S. President George W. Bush's trip to Seoul last month," he said. President Kim's observation was made after the announcement of an inter-Korean agreement on the South's dispatch of a special envoy to Pyeongyang next week. At the same time, the U.S. and North Korea have had contacts through their diplomatic channels in New York, which is viewed as a prelude to the resumption of dialogue. Pyeongyang also recently showed signs of resuming talks with Japan. "The U.S. is the only remaining superpower in the world, and the North should accept this fact and act accordingly," Kim said, calling the ROK-U.S. alliance an "indispensable condition of Korea's survival." Kim's emphasis on the alliance came as the Korean government is selecting the contractor for its next-generation jet fighter. Boeing's F-15K and Rafale of France have passed the first-phase deliberations. For the second phase, however, officials say the Seoul-Washington alliance would be the most important factor in the final decision, making the U.S. aircraft an almost sure bet to win the multi-billion-dollar project. However, civic groups are raising questions about what they say is the impartiality of the process. Kim urged the senior military officers not to have any hesitation to tell the nation of the importance of the Korea-U.S. relationship. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Bruce.Sims@med.va.gov To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 07:33:47 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Well, since you asked........ Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ray: ".......I'm still collecting info to add to our KMA FAQ. I have info from Ali on Hankido and info from Rudy on KongShinBup. Perhaps Ian would like to have info added on Chosondo??? Anything eles missing? Feel free to submit any info or updates and I'll work on getting it added......" You have provided some truely great cultural contributions and I am wondering if it is worth considering identifying 10 or so particularly well-received posts around which to build a category of such contributions from folks in DD-Land. This could include book reviews, cultural resources (like the commonly asked for language assistance), and perhaps even up-coming events. Just some thoughts. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Melinda: "....i've got a student who's an 8th gup. she's scared to death of breakfalls and rolls. its because she's very heavy and is fearful of injury. there is some concern of that but we use an 8 inch landing mat. she's probably about 260lbs and sometimes i think she uses her weight as an excuse not to do stuff. i want to respect her knowledge of her own....." Learning to roll and breakfall are scarey under the best of circumstances. We humans are born with only two "fears"--- fear of loud noises and fear of falling, so learning to fall is a challenge for the best of us. What makes your situation so challenging is that you must add to this a person whose weight over-taxes the musclo-skeletal system she has for managing the motion of that weight. I am going to assume that like most people she has had more than enough "help" (coaching, cajoling etc.) about her weight so I am not even going to go there. However, I think you can raise her comfort level significantly by working on her conditioning (espec abdominals) and her range of motion and flexibility. By this I mean that before she even begins to train in breakfalls she must be confident that she can comfortably move through her entire range of motion necessary without fear of "pulling" or straining something. I would start there various tumbling exercizes and skills. Perhaps Hyung executed slowly with exaggerated motion might help. Kinesthetics are the key to this and it has much more to do with HER comfort level so it will probably be a slow haul with a lot of specialized attention. BTW: There are some muscles which do not get attended to when involved with these activities. Without getting graphic let me say that anyone who has "leaked" (or anything else :-) ) when they have sneezed knows what I am talking about. A breakfall for folks who are over-weight, older, or perhaps re-couping for a medical condition can easily be an occasion for great embarrassment. There are old putz-s like me who could probably give a healthy G-D what someone thinks. :-) But most people have a well-developed sense of decorum and rightly fear having something "disgraceful" happen at that moment of impact when falling. Just some thoughts. I can't tell you that they will be any faster than faxes, cuz she doesn't like having to print them out and fought this by returning 3 months of on-line apps without telling anyone (said the system didn't work - it did), but they did upgrade her computer to speed it up. They can't change the 1/1-12/31 membership because of all the election nonsense. Have to have a cut off for the numbers for 8/1 - as well as the insurance. Personally I don't understand why I have to constantly prove to them that I am a member, when they have the records. But I did win a major battle when they wanted me to have those who sign up to referee on-line mail in their memberships and referee certifications. I had to go to the top but they were persuaded that it was stupid to make it simpler for people to register to VOLUNTEER to work outrageous hours and then negate the whole process by making them mail in documents that WERE SENT TO THEM BY THE USTU in the first place. And hint hint - President Lee ALWAYS tells the referees and others -IF you have a problem, please let him know. Bad thing - he does not read email. Good thing - he loves the fax machine. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 20:30:48 PST Subject: [The_Dojang] non-digestified ? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Checking again... With the new format of the_dojang it is now easy to open up subscription to those that would like a non-digestified version. i.e. the email msgs would come individually instead of bunched together in an issue of the digest. The last time we checked into this only a handful of people were interested. But it is time to check again. If you'd like that type of subscription please drop me a private email at the addr below.
