It starts off with, "Most people have a natural fear of falling, and new students of aikijutsu or aikido are no exception. In fact, one of the biggest challenges a new student faces is becoming comfortable and confident of his ability to receive a throwing technique and stay in one piece." Does this sound like what you need, other than a 10 inch thick mat? I have trained with mats before in the past, and have broken my little toe a couple of times when I got it caught in between mats in the seams. We bought the Bronze Medal floor a few years ago. This way we could taylor it exactly to our dojang. Fits great and not too bouncy or too soft to kick on, but good enough to dump guys like Mike Tomlinson on. This is the one I recommend for Hapkido. I send you a picture of it. I've noticed we are taught to do bouncing stretches here. But, North American thought says that bouncing is the worst thing you can do because you end up with micro-tears in your muscles and so on. Should I and other students be worried about this? Thanks very much, Teressa Yahoo! i was looking at these, too, but that was kind of a turnoff. might be fine for me, but i know my students wouldnt want to have to be in high supply of cheap t-shirts for knife training classes unless they were really dedicated to that part of the training. just some thoughts mel Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 9 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 00:08:07 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: breakfalls Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net thanks jeffery...i think i'll be sharing all of this support with my student. i appreciate the feedback from folks who've dealt with and met the same challenge. :) melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 10 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 00:25:58 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: heavy thoughts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> hi bruce, interesting expansion on this one. yes, she's been through the wringer about weight loss. i'm heavy myself, so i think its encouraging to her to know that since we opened our school here in october and i've been back on track with increased training, i've lost two sizes myself. slow but sure. she's also heard positive feedback from other students on their losses since starting. i think its courageous that she's there in the first place, which to me shows some dedication to her physical status and desires to improve her level of health whether or not that includes weight loss. she's working on abdominals already, doing crunches in sets of 40, 30, 20, 10 and has been able to get very close to completing each set in each round. she's also doing leg lifts. its been a confidence booster for her so far. hopefully, i can encourage her to continue these in her personal time away from the dojang and perhaps add some new exercises for her. i've even offered to give "phone support" if she'd like...all she has to do is tell me she'd like a push and i'll give it until she's able to do it herself. i think we all have trouble sometimes with the idea that action precedes motivation....i know i do :). just dont want to foster dependence here. i'll approach the other topic with her and i think she'll be fine with discussing it. if her response is "depends"...lol....then i'll talk to her about kegel exercises to improve her ability to maintain her bladder. i hadnt even considered that...good point and thanks. melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 11 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 00:29:47 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: breakfalls Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> thanks miguel... after all the feedback on this, we'll defintely be getting one of the workout balls. one of my masters was giving me another great ab exercise with these balls, too, so it just adds to the reason for getting one. thanks for the ideas! melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 12 From: Creed71963@aol.com Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 01:25:33 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: ITF memo Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Well, I have no idea what the heck is going on with the ITF. I am not a member of the ITF (Whichever one that is), but this seems to be a serious situation that could have some long-term effects on TKD down the road. Can anyone explain to me, in simple and non-partisan langauge, what's happening? I get the impression of a muntiny by some ITF board members, and now there's two ITF running around, claiming there are the real ITF. I can't make any sense out of it from what I've read on-line, and I'm wondering if there's someone who can outline the events that seems to have caused this split in the ITF..... This comment will perhaps cause the DD members to conjure-up images of a ditzy little girl with pigtails bobbing back and forth when they see my name but here goes: When I was a cheerleader back in the day, (let the laughter begin) we had to be able to execute a few basic gymnastic elements. One of which was a basic somersault. I will never forget a particularly heavy young lady going into hysterics. No one could understand her seriously adverse reaction to tumbling. She sobbed each and every time the coach or her fellow cheerleaders tried to teach her. She eventually quit. I saw this same person, now a very healthy looking/living young woman, not too long ago. I could not help but ask her why she quit cheerleading. She said that when she tucked her chin into her chest she nearly suffocated herself... Perhaps some components of the Art are just beyond her (the heavy student's) physical limitations at this point... --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang It's a great day for Taekwondo!
