But, North American thought says that > bouncing is the worst thing you can do because you end > up with micro-tears in your muscles and so on. Should > I and other students be worried about this? I would say yes. We frequently teach the way we were taught. Although learning in "PE" continues, some just fall back on teaching the same way their instructors taught them. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not. I was first taught to bounce when stretching, but it seems that it was perhaps 15 or 20 years ago that holding the stretch, not bouncing, became more popular. Comments from others? Tell us more about your Taekkyon training? Have you found Taekkyon dojangs commonly available there in SK or ??? Are you in the Seoul area? Andrew >From today's KH: Women's taekwondo competition to kick off The nation's first international women's open taekwondo competition will be held in Gyeongju, South Gyeongsang Province, this month, organizers said yesterday. The women's taekwondo event is expected to draw about 700 taekwondo practitioners and officials from at least 30 countries, they said. Countries that intend to participate are female taekwondo powers like Spain, Germany, China, Taiwan and the United States. Korea will send about 400 practitioners and officials to the event. The first Korea Gyeongju International Women's Taekwondo Open Championships, approved by the Seoul-based World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), are scheduled to open April 18 for a four-day run at Gyeongju Indoor Gymnasium, the organizers said. "Our festival, a good meeting place for women taekwondo practitioners from all around the world, will serve as a catalyst for the development of women's taekwondo," said Rep. Lim Jin-chool of the opposition Grand National Party. Lim is the chairwoman of the organizing committee for the competition. The WTF, taekwondo's world governing body, estimates the number of taekwondo practitioners at about 50 million worldwide, of which 2.5 million, or 5 percent, are women. Besides individual and team competitions in the sparring and "pumsae," or taekwondo form categories, Lim said the four-day tournament will also feature cultural and entertainment events, including a fashion show featuring court costume and a photo exhibition. "The women's open competition has another significance in that it is being held in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla Dynasty (57 B.C. to 935)," Lim said. Gyeongju produced Gen. Kim Yoo-shin, the famous leader of the Hwarang ("Flower of Youth") warriors during the Silla Dynasty. Modern taekwondo is largely composed of several parts: sparring, or "gyeorugi" in Korean, forms training, or "pumsae," techniques for breaking objects, or "gyeokpa," and self-defense as well as taekwondo gymnastics. Taekwondo, a Korean martial art with a 2,000-year history, debuted as an official medal sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Taekwondo is also included as a medal sport at the 2004 Athens Olympics. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] TKD self defense To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 17:40:42 PST Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Ok, let me clarify my request. According to our friend Dakin, if you check the TKD pubs of Major General Choi the TKD Hoshinsul shown is Hapkido and is demoed by a Master of Hapkido. With, how did the quote go, something like 'this is the highest form of Taekwondo'. Most of the TKD Hoshinsul I've seen is Hapkido-ish. Looking at a right front roll: At first the student >places right knee next to the ball (ball is on the ground) reaches over the >ball with right hand, places right cheek on ball then thrusts forward >executing the roll around the ball.  After some proficency, the ball can be >used without the reach over and finally gripped under the right arm and >standing up. Then it's time to loose the ball. Another training aid I found that works well for back fall is the top padded part of the wave master bags that century sells (or something similar). Have the student tuck their head between their knees and their back is in the position it should be in for a back fall. Have the student just let themselves roll over and execute the back fall.   Ken Legendre innae@netexpress.net 3rd Dan TKD 8th Gup HKD --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 19:55:18 PST Subject: [The_Dojang] Hotline for Foreigners Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Seoul City to Open Hotline for Foreigners March 31, 2002 Starting Monday (April 1), a free hotline will be available in the capital that will enable foreign residents to report any inconveniences or make inquiries regarding services such as transportation and tourism, city officials said Sunday. Callers will be able to reach the Seoul Hotline staff by dialing 080-731-0911 during business hours. Seoul city's English Web site, "Seoul Focus," already offers useful information at http://www.metro.seoul.kr. After working hours and during holidays, foreigners can leave messages on an answering machine and will be contacted later regarding their inquiries or comments. Seoul city will provide the service in English, Japanese and Chinese in the first step. French and Turkish hotlines will be added during this summer's World Cup soccer finals. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 22:15:52 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: JAMA breakfalls Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> lol....yes, i'll check that out before adding padding to my mat :)....thanks for the reference, randall :) melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 10 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sun, 31 Mar 2002 22:23:13 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: like, duh, dude Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net this may be true and i think someone else mentioned talking to her about taking her time and not worrying about rank advancement yet. she seems quite dedicated to her training, which gives hope and emphasis on the words "at this point" in your comments above. i hope she will give herself time and not become too discouraged in the interim...but i guess part of that is my responsibility to provide her some challenges which can definitely be met while we work on the rest in time. thanks, melinda :) Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang It's a great day for Taekwondo!
