Master Allison (5th Dan) has taught at the international several times in the past but was a new daddy around the time of the 16th seminar. I have inside information because he's my hapkido instructor :-) The event is listed on GM West's events page at http://www.hapkido.com/seminars.htm Or you can register online at Master Allison's site at http://www.hapkidosunmookwan.com/seminarapp.html See you on the mat :-) Charles Richards Moo Do Jae Ja Yahoo! JR is absolutely correct in his advise to create a good reputation. It painfully apparent that advertising no longer brings enough people in the door. In fact, in many cases ads do not even pay for itself (especially Yellow Page ads). A good reputation, on the other hand, will not only bring students into the school --- it keeps them there. Regarding the time it takes to eanr a Black Belt. This is often directly related to the amount of material you will learn. If all you do is spar and prepare for tournaments, it may not take very long; however, if you want to learn a martial art like Hap Ki Do, it takes 4-5 years. Ofcourse, you can also go overboard on this. I promoted only one student from white belt to black belt between opening my own school in 1973 and 1989. I also promoted a few others who had come to me with previous training. This was admittedly a bit too much, and I have since relaxed my personal vision of what a Black Belt should be to a more reasonable level. Today, a hardworking student can earn a Black Belt in four to five years, and children may take twice that long. In fact, my curriculum is designed to help the average student earn a belt in six months. With the number of belts we have in our system, this works out to about 48 - 54 months for an adult. Children have twice that many levels; but, depending on their skill and work habits they may be put on the adult curriculum. I have had many successful martial art school owners and "gurus" tell me that my methods are self-destructing. Nevertheless, like JR, in my area I have seen many schools that took the advise of the "gurus" go belly up, and I am still here:) Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Kim Farral" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 19:55:8 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] New Address Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Yo There Fellow Martial Artists...It's been over a year since last I Posted anything here...I moved from the Land of Dorothy and Toto to the America's Cross Roads...I am residing in Ft. Bubba Bruce, :) Not so sure that up-coming events are such a good idea given how quickly up-coming turns into long-gone, but the other ideas are good. Thanks!
