The first by a human, the second by society. We can all agree in the cold logic of emotionless thought, that only an appropriate level of force should be used to defend oneself. But only idiots and the courts expect that from a human during the course of an actual confrontation. The first Korea Yeosu Open International Taekwondo Championships will open Friday for a four-day run at Jinnam Gymnasium in downtown Yeosu, organizers said yesterday. The four-day competition will be followed by a one-day tour of Yeosu and its vicinity, they said. Countries that intend to participate in the inaugural competition include the United States, Spain, Germany, England, Italy, Moscow, France, Japan, the Philippines, Brazil and China. "We are organizing the international open taekwondo event to promote our bid to host the 2010 World Expo," said Yeosu Mayor Joo Seung-yong. Joo, who serves as chairman of the organizing committee for the international competition, said he hopes that the taekwondo event will raise the image of Yeosu greatly in the world community. Yeosu is competing with five international cities such as Shanghai, China, and Russia's Moscow, for the 2010 World Exposition. The Paris-based Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) will vote on the venue for the 2010 World Expo in December at its assembly meeting. "The participating countries are all members of the BIE, and we will offer various cultural and tourism programs for the foreign visitors during the taekwondo event," Joo said. Yeosu has about 30,000 taekwondo practitioners, accounting for some 10 percent of its population, said Kim Won-ho, secretary general of the organizing committee. "We are considering making the taekwondo event an annual event, which will be decided on later this year," Kim said. The nation's first international women's open taekwondo competition is also scheduled to open Thursday for a four-day run in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. sjkang@koreaherald.co.kr Kang Seok-jae Staff reporter 2002.04.15 --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 15:18:40 PDT Subject: [The_Dojang] from Korea Times Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Noticed this at the Korea Times website. Is this example accurate? I thought it worked a bit differently than as described here. Ray ======================================================== In Korea, a newly born baby starts from one year old from the moment he/she is born. (in other words, we, Koreans, count age from the period of pregnancy) For example, if somebody was born in November 1999. he is one year old until Dec 31 '99 and becomes 2 years old from 1st Jan 2000. therefore he will be 3 years old on his first birth day (Nov 2000) whereas he can only be one year old in America... --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 15:33:51 PDT Subject: [The_Dojang] Park Jung Tae (fwd) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Forwarded message: LETTER OF CONDOLENCE From Master Choi Jung Hwa, ITF President April 14, 2002 It was with a heavy heart and great sadness that I learnt of the death of Grandmaster Park Jung Tae of the Global Taekwon-Do Federation on Friday the 12th after a long illness. Taekwon-Do worldwide has indeed lost a great ambassador, technician and innovator, with his contribution to the International Taekwon-Do Federation in the days when he was a member and later in his role as Secretary General remaining forever engraved historically for posterity. I would, personally, at this time, and on behalf of all members of the ITF, wish to express deepest sympathy to Mrs. Park and her family during this period of mourning for a dear husband and loving father. Our fond memories are of him. Our thoughts and well wishes are with them.
