Everyone seemed to have a great time, especially my assistant, Dr. Dave Collipp and I, who managed to lower the grilled "bratwurst" population to the endangered species level on Saturday. Special thanks to list member Kevin Janisse, who helped with the instructional duties and allowed this tired old man to have some rest during the day. By the way, if you're feeling secure during your travels by air, ponder this for a second. I managed to go through two security checkpoints with different names on my ticket and Photo ID. I was unaware the first time, and amazed at the second, when we almost missed our flight, but were waved through by the security folks even though they were made aware of the error. When the error was finally brought to the airlines attention (I won't mention the name, but it rhymes with "fourth best") they freaked and then moved me to 1st class for the remainder of the trip...Scary!......J. I don't want to sound like I'm preaching but I would like to make a few comments. First in reply to Anne's statement - I don't remember the exact wording, but she said something about how she didn't think that God would allow her to have such a passion for martial arts if it was wrong to be involved in it. I'd just like to point out that there are a lot of things that men and women have a passion for that are sinful. David had uncontrolled passion for Bathsheba and sinned. He didn't say that it must be ok or God would not allow him to feel that way. God gives us the option to love, honor, and obey Him. It is our choice. In regards to martial arts - in and of themselves- being wrong or sinful, I think it depends on each person. If you train for inner strength, self control, and to be a peacemaker, is this sinful ? Should any of us be training so we can go out and beat up our neighbors or murder someone ? That's hardly the martial spirit. I rather like to have the attitude of Matthew 10: 16 - ".........be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." Some would ask if it is ever acceptable to harm another to defend yourself ? Well, I'm not up for a philosophical or religious debate. I think each person has to decide this for himself/herself. But I do find it interesting to think about Peter cutting the servant's ear off when they came to take Jesus ( John 18:10-12). Not the fact that Jesus rebuked him, but why did Peter have a sword in the first place if it is never acceptable to defend yourself ? Why hadn't Jesus already gotten rid of all their weapons ? I think the most important thing for me in my training is that I should not put martial arts before God , or family, or other responsibilities. In particular, I don't feel comfortable missing church to attend class on Wed. night or attend seminars on Sunday morning ( some of you may have noticed me wandering in late in a dress). I'm not condemming those who do, I just try not to. Finally, some may have concerns about bowing in class. I had to really reason that out at first and pray about it. And I came to this conclusion - if I bow out of respect to Mr. West ( who is human by the way) or other martial artists, how much more humility should I have when I bow in church or in prayer before Almighty God ? It really gave me a whole new attitude about bowing for prayer and I am thankful for it. ANyway, don't want to bore you all to death. I'm no preacher. Just had some thoughts to share. God Bless. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Chereecharmello@aol.com Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 00:13:24 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] HELP! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Has any one on the DD ever had problems with a student whose contract they refused to renew? I am looking for stories/solutions to problems related to "legal mental instability." I am having problems with a person who I fear may try to hurt someone in her ROUTINE/DAILY attempts to be confrontational, antagonistic, malicious, rancorous, virulent, and any other adjective to can think of to describe a relatively mean-spirited person... We had to go to the Police with this one... Any Police Officers, Psychologists, Attorneys, etc., wishing to offer advice, please feel free to do so! Thanks in advance. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
