However, along with the all the pertinant info and a general release clause on my application, I have an agreement which includes my requirements for training in my studio as far as behavior in and out of the dojang. This agreement includes my prohibition against using my art in other than self defense. I go over this in detail when a student joins. I also tell each student if they are involved in an altercation, I want to be the first one that hears about it. Now I may have an advantage over you and a lot of others on the list, because I live in small town, so if anything happens I generally hear about it sooner or later. When I do, I have a one on one discussion with the student. Based on the situation, I decide whether or not I will give the student a second chance, and I generally do. However, I have ejected some very physically gifted students in the past because I could not in good conscience teach them more because they refused to assimilate the mental and philosophical aspects of the art I teach. Yes, I don't like to loose the money or the student, but my reputation and my schools reputation is more important to me than the money. After all, your reputation is what brings in the most students, at least for me. Danny Dunn <<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Gregory Giddins To: "'the_dojang@martialartsresource.net'" Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 09:07:18 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Chrisitanity Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (I screwed up this post the last time I tried to send it... here goes again) There are many arguments for and against Christians in the MA, but definately the most common argument against CMA (in my experience) revolves around the concept of Christian pacifism (the second being involvement in the occult - that's another story all-together). My personal belief on the pacifism topic is summed up well by one of my favorite Christian author/philosophers, Francis Schaeffer: "The Bible is clear here: I am to love my neighbor as myself, in the manner needed, in a practical way, in the midst of the fallen world, at my particular point of history. This is why I am not a pacifist. Pacifism in this poor world in which we live - this lost world - means that we desert the people who need our greatest help. I come upon a big, burly man beating a tiny tot to death I plead with him to stop. Suppose he refuses? What does love mean now? Love means that I stop him in any way I can, including hitting him. To me this is not only necessary for humanitarian reasons: it is loyalty to Christ's commands concerning Christian love in a fallen world. What about the little girl? If I desert her to the bully, I have deserted the true meaning of Christian love - responsibility to my neighbor." The bully illustration is a little cliche in my opinion, but it gets the point across using a hypothetical situation, which is really what the pacifistic argument (and martial arts) tends to center around anyway. I firmly believe not protecting loved ones - or the inoocent - is a sin of omission (Thanks to J.P. Moreland for providing that thought), which is no diferent than a sin of comission. Not doing something you're obligated to do is just as bad as doing something you're obligated not to do. And we're obligated to show our love in a practical way. Of course, that also obligates us not to tear out someones throat of they're trying to snatch a purse form an old lady, but those type of obligations are often reenforced by the local legal system anyway... sorry for rambling Greg Giddins --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Chereecharmello@aol.com Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 11:38:34 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] understated Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "Contract with the individual to make specific changes in their behaviors. If your contract is sound it should have a punishing factor if the behavior is repeated or increases, but also a reward if the behavior diminishes or extinguishes. " Thank you for your reply Mr. Sims, but I think my point was understated. I did not mean I think this person is going to "karate chop" an innocent person. I think that she is capable of fatally harming someone. She has demonstrated a gross antipathy towards the head instructor, who is male. Her words and actions are not those of a stable individual. She has screamed at him during class, claiming that he was trying to harm her, yet he was no where in her vicinity. She talks to herself about "hating" people. She has swung at people trying to correct her body position. We had to have the police remove her 5 time thus far. Once she claimed that she was dating one of the instructors (who is elderly and mildly retarded) and told the police they had no right to take her away from her "boyfriend." Another time she brought a baby carriage filled with 5, life-size baby-dolls dressed in real children's closed. When I asked her if she collected dolls, she scolded me and said they were her children and proceeded to name them (might I add that they were the names of the children in my class!) This is not just a personality quirk or learning disability I am dealing with... Her original contract was honored. We even offered her a second, but she never paid, AND still tried to attend class. Our contract does includes a clause that more-or-less states that we have the right to revoke membership if the person demonstrates negative behavior. Now she is now claiming that we are discriminating because she is handicapped. I have had indigestion for a week now. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 20:55:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Ken McDonough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Bahamas and Windjammer Stuff, Part I, Vol 1 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I figure if Ray can say hello from London (Fish and Chips=blah cuisine), I can give the lowdown on some Carribean stuff. Got the jet fueled and ready to put the smack down on some people. Been practicing my Carribean lingo, re: "I'm the bad lad from Trinidad, Mon. Don't do no ganga, mon !" Here is a blurb from the brochure (slightly embellished with the McD touch): "For you gung ho martial artists, sumo wrestlers, street warriors, Dojang Denizen dwellers, we got the cruise for you. If you dream of smooth, glowing skin and healthy hair spend one week on Windjammer's floating Spa at Sea and all your wishes will be granted. Join other sun-seeking shipmates and a crew of relaxation experts including yoga instructors and massage therapists who will perform their magic on you using a combination of natural, island style therapies...also visit a stellar selection of pretty beaches and explore the rainforests on guided walks..." Then they said "Pack lightly our dress code onboard is relaxed and informal...Bloody Mary's and Rum Swizzlers are included...clothing optional...martial arts instruction provided...snorkeling and sleeping on deck permitted...watch out for the McD man..." If they have a computer may be able to fill ya in on the martial arts stuff. But, will try to stay away from the racy stuff. Not my cup of tea if ya know what I mean. I am a clean cut sort of guy, liberal leanings, penny loafers, and Van Huesen shirts with a crewcut is my gig (not !). I'm leavin on a jet plane,,,don't know when I will be back again...oh babe, I hate to run (not). McD...(The Man from Glad) Yahoo!
