Les is a great guy and a very formidable individual. I had the pleasure of meeting and working out with him a while back and I highly recommend his expertise. Tell Les that Mike Tomlinson from Florida says hello. They also said you disappeared the second day during the kicking phase. I am just wondering what you didn't like about it. I know for a fact that the training is very hard and rough on the body, was this the problem? During these training sessions there is a lot of repitition and very little talking so it will wear you down physically but this is the ONLY way to understand and learn Sin Moo, there is no substitute for a million repetitions. We've just calculated this out, and from White Belt through Third Degree (aka Master's Club) runs approximately 79 months, or over 6 1/2 years! Figuring it takes around 10 months to get to your Green Belt (5th Gup), the program discussed is $7K for 69 months of training, which is consistent with the thought of $100/month. On a 10 week testing cycle, it typically takes 2 1/2 years to be eligible to test for your First Dan. I personally find it frightening to state up front fees on the cost of training, but some people appreciate it. One nice thing about this approach is that you are agreeing to train until you earn your Third Degree - whether that takes 69 months, or 96! From my experience, if it takes you longer than the "norm", you typically do NOT have to pay for those "additional" months of training! You may want to check with your instructor on this point. Also, perhaps the Black Belt Club would be of more interest, which takes you to First Dan. Required clinics??? I've never seen clinics that are required to be able to train/test. There are no requirements to reach Third Degree, other than age, time in rank, and (of course) the physical requirements. You should not be required to join the Instructor's Development Program to reach that goal. With the 9 SSI Classes required for Instructor Certification, your cost would definitely go up - not to mention CPR Training, etc......... Yes, testing fees are typically separate, as is membership in the ATA, which buys you rank tracking, certificates, tournament participation, quarterly magazine, insurance, etc. Hope this helps. There are many styles and organizations - any attempt to compare them will only frustrate you. As with any organization, I am sure you can find good and bad within the ATA. Train hard, remain true to yourself, and enjoy your journey as a martial artist. Be comfortable with who you are, and you'll find no need for comparisons. Mark.Lasich@alcoa.com --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Tue, 07 May 2002 09:29:11 -0500 From: Danny Dodge To: Subject: [The_Dojang] ATA Cost Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello DDer's After reading the post on the ATA cost to reach 3rd Dan I dug out my financial agreement with my Instructer (i.e."Contract", I know that can be a dirty word with some MA's) and calculator and came up with the following figures. For a family of 3 I'm paying $2940.00 ($98.00 a month for 30 months). Add in the testing fee's for all tests for three people up to 3rd Dan ($35.00 each per testing) and that comes to $4130.00 paid out over approximately 6-8 years. It takes about 2.5 to 3 years to reach the rank of 1st Dan at our Dojang. From my limited experience so far I gather it takes anywhere from 2 to 5 years to reach 1st Dan depending on your local Instructers curriculum. I also study Hapkido at the same Dojang and there is no extra charge for that other then testing fees which is only $20.00 per testing. So adding in my Hapkido testing fee's for myself through 3rd Dan and you get to $4370.00. If my children end up going into Hapkido and staying until they reach the rank of 3rd Dan that will bring the grand total to $4780.00 for 3 people to train in 2 arts and receive their 3rd Dan grade in both TKD and HKD. Oh Yeah, for those that care/think it matters, I'm affiliated with the WTF and yes these Dan grades are issued through the WTF and the Kukkiwon. Personally if TKD/HKD helps keep me in good shape physically and mentally and I can prevent someone from beating the tar out of me if I'm ever forced to defend myself I'll be happy. I hope this helps you out. I hate to correct you but ATA does not use the term Dan we use Degree. Sorry I know that is sorry I know that is so anal. As far as the Fees go each school has there own rate they can charge. So each school is different. Some charge a lot and others charge a little it just depends on how much money they want to make. The 7,000. dollars may be everything including testing fees along with your monthly fees and gear. Good luck and have a great time. I know I do. Mo Mo Money talks, mine say's good bye! Yahoo! I see that Bruce Sims has recently had a bad experience, but I'm curious as to what made it so bad. I remember a seminar with GM Ji that was wonderful! So, the question is, what makes a seminar good or bad? What are the general expectations at seminars? Why do we even go to them?
