I personally really like Hapkido and everything about it regardless of what anyone thinks about it in terms of effectiveness, usefulness etc. I've always wanted to do a Martial Art when I was a kid. I wanted to learn everything about it and its mystery. Well, I can say that Karate would have been the ultimate choice to a boy growing up watching the Karate Kid on the cinemas back in the 80's. However, my folks never let me prefering me to study. I had to hide from my folks the fact that I played A grade Hockey and Soccer after hours!!! I ended up meeting with a guy who was a kickboxing champ down here. He started to train me up, but it was all based on aggression, and as I was already a kid with problems from pyscho parents, this was not good. Coupled with girlfriend problems I was going downhill fast. A good friend of mine introduced me to T'ai Chi at that stage of my life. I tell you what, it was the best thing. I had gone from agro dude, to at least someone who could control my temper. I ended up having to leave my home town because of a job, and wasn't happy that I couldn't find the same T'ai Chi school where I currently reside. I revisited my memories of wanting to do a proper martial art, I know it sounds vain, but I liked the idea to say hey I can do this, or that, I am someone. Now, I think only that Hapkido has helped me to become a little better as a person, some direction and peace in life. I had a look at Aikido, and thought it was a little strange at first. Kung Fu? Well, I tried Wing Chun but didn't have that reverence to it. It got to the point where I wanted something that would be for life, I wasn't interested in 2 months here, 1 year there. It was then I saw Hapkido. Kicks, locks, throws involved...Sensational. Then there was a search for a good Hapkido school and I finally found one! I've now been training hard, started doing 2 days as week, and now 2 years later, almost 5 - 6 days a week now. I can't help it, its addictive. I finish work, and catch a train to the city and the class goes for 1.5 hours, back at home by 8pm. I've still got plenty of time to catch up with mates for drinks, dinner or movies. I still have weekends as Saturday class is for weapons, sword, stick and strap etc, and only goes for 1 hour in the morning. As far as I'm concerned, its a lot of training, but not much for a hobby that I enjoy, and the people are great. I like it - so thats why I do it wiht the intensity that I do. In terms of self defense, I think its great, however my fears started to grow on me when I realised that my skill and technique did not protect me from a friend using a plastic bottle as a knife, and simulating a frenzied knife attack. I would have been dead had it had been a real knife. Rather than b1tching about Hapkido not being sufficient enough or giving into the Knife fighters, BJJ No holds bar arena of fans, I asked my master about my concern. He said he has been devising a whole new training regime and variations on techiques for such situations. I realised then it was not that Hapkido may not have been up for the task, it was that I had not trained for such circumstance! But the problem is that with anything, it takes time. I'm scared that in this freaky city I might get done on the train, or street or outside my home. I thought of Krav Maga only as a quick self defense, thinking because its come from the military,it must be good. So, as I've said, Hapkido is for life, but anyting else is just short term. nat Best Regards, Nathaniel Maras ------------------------------------------------------- Mid Range Solution Centre, IT@AMP Ph: 9768 3133, Mob: 0403 237 130 This email message and any accompanying attachments may contain information that is confidential and is subject to legal privilege. Gm Ji is pushing 70. Will you still be out there on the mat > teaching the young bucks when you're that old??? > > Ray> Yeah, good point. Like GM Canete. That old geezer is pushing 82 and still throwing down Eskrima stuff. I reviewed a tape of him in the early 1970's and he was much more fluid and sharp. He was doing an exhibition in Cebu and combining Judo and Eskrima. Looked very fluid. Now, he is slower and not as smooth. What do ya expect ? Anyway, moving along. I just heard about this boxing club where I live and talked to the big bad guy running it.He is one of those big guys from across the tracks that you don't want to meet on a Saturday night at a tavern who is in a bad mood. Seems interesting. For a geezer like me they have you work on defense, bag drills, timed rounds, speed bag, and stances. Right near my house. May try it for a bit. I have always thought that boxers could kick a lot of rear if in a tangle. Sparred with a boxer once in a Karate class. That dude could spar. He had the right skills. Any thoughts on boxing as a practical self-defense art ? Do they bow in a boxing class ? Worship Rocky versus Hang So Mi Do ? Remember that line in Rocky I, something like "Yeah fight the Champ...the legs are going, the hands are going...and I am gonna fight the Champ...you didn't care about me Mickey when I asked for your help...I am gonna get my face kicked in..." Something like that. After that may look at a Hapkido school near me. Think it is affiliated with that GM West guy down in Jackson. That dead guy on the shore in the Carribean is still on my mind. Don't want to end up that way. More rambling thoughts brought to you by: Big Ken Yahoo! I love how Bruce couldn't even make it thru two days of training and had to mysteriously disappear from the training the second day without even having the respect to tell anyone, but then can totally "analyze" how "good" Doju Nim Ji's training is and breakdown all of his weaknesses. How can you not even have the mental strength to make it thru two days of training in a row? I have a blue belt at my school that has two fused vertebrae in his back and a right forearm that is totally numb from an AK round he took in it in Beirut, he can't even move all of his fingers on that hand. He is totally disabled from his war injuries but he managed to train at one of Ji's seminars for two days, complete with sleeping on the mats in between the two days. When he couldn't do all of the kicks right because of his injuries he apologized to me and said he didn't want to show any disrespect to me or Doju Nim Ji by not being able to perform! Bruce, you go to a training event as a 4th Dan in HAPKIDO and you can't make thru two days training but have the audacity to "academically judge" Sin Moo Hapkido? Dude you are truly a trip. Bruce is it true that you got your picture taken with Doju Nim Ji before you left the training early? Is it true you even went and got a chair so you could sit next to him? Pretty impressive!
