Many Hapkido people are not aware of Gm Ji's Hapkido kicks. They are very different from the TKD/Karate-ish kicks one frequently learns. I could build an entire seminar around just this portion of Sin Moo HKD....." In all honesty, I have to concede this one point to you. Putting aside the material of Saturday for the moment I can say in all candor that I would have liked to delved deeper into the kicks that I saw Sunday morning. Its not so much that I agree with several of the excutions, or that I would have even found a place for the material in my own classes. But I think you know that "little bell" that goes off in a MA head when he is presented with material which is at once the same and different from how he does things. I would have been curious to know more about the rationales that supported some of that kicking material. It just wasn't in the cards that day. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Bruce: Thanks for the compliment, now I am blushing. With the number of times that you have been to my dojang why do you still spell may last name wrong? But with that in mind, should I now hit Master West up for my 6th dan? :) On a private not, you stated in the past that you may be able to attend the one-year anniversary picnic on an outside chance held at a local forest near the dojang (nice park). Do you think you will be able to attend? Write me privately.... On a more serious note, even before I met my current teacher, Master West I was always concerned with just what you mentioned, grace and fluidity in technique. This comes from an understanding and practice of the greater hapkido theories in addition to an advanced understanding of basic motion. My first 3 KMA teachers, who were Korean nationals, were more concerned with the outcome of the technique and not the technique. Do not get me wrong as they were excellent teachers, but I did not grasp a 'understanding' of technique until my studies with the parent art of hapkido (something we discussed here back in March). Two things I learned helped me the most. Understand and apply to all techniques basic motion and advanced motion such as 30 degree theories and the extension of ki long after the technique is finished, etc. When Master West says that you should practice a technique 3500 times (1500 with a partner, 1500 without a partner and 1500 times with your eyes closed) one has a better understanding of detail and application. Being attentive to every part of my body, every joint, angle and location of each during a technique without a partner made me realize that the technique does not change with a partner, nor does the technique truly change if the attack is a, b, or c. With that in mind, let me first point out that my Master is Master West and I have also enjoyed my training these past years with Dr. Kimm He Young. I owe these two men a great deal. I have never met Master Ji, the founder of Sinmoo hapkido and unless he is here next door, my budget will probably never allow to train with him. Nevertheless I am very happy with my teacher and I am not going anywhere. As hapkido is not competitive like taekwondo there are many styles, good to ugly. There are many teachers who outrank me who have less time than I although they have 200 videos in every magazine. I hold no ill against them. I am putting in time and making hapkido my own art as all of those at a more advanced rank should be doing. I have turned down 6th dan several times and even one 7th dan from those who were not my teachers. Bruce, I understand you concerns, but he did not become a hapkido 9th dan without a reason and he is not a young man. So obviously you must have picked up something positive about your experience and training with him. Jere R. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, please don't expect everyone to respect that opinion. Personally, I highly respect people who respect others by listening more and saying less. Here are three of those people... "Never be afraid or unwilling to learn something new..." Ray Terry "Maybe more practice and less cerebral masturbation is in order." Michael Tomlinson "Don't go away mad Bruce, just go away." Rick Nabors Thank you, all three, for being so candid, yet so succinct!
