Taekwon-do Chang Shi Ja GENERAL CHOI HONG HI Sunday 12th May 2002 At 8.45am Eastern Standard time, Air Canada Flight 169 bearing the beloved Founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi, took off from Toronto's Pearson Airport bound for Bejing, enroute to Pyong Yang in North Korea, the land of his birth. The heartfelt and sincere wishes of the world's Taekwon-Do community go with him for a safe and uneventful journey coupled to a speedy and full recovery from his recent battle with cancer. Maybe it is only one particular >instructor/organization that does that. Probably so. I discovered that in a book a friend let me borrow written by a C.S. Kim, called "Authentic Tang Soo Do." Excellent book, fully illustrated forms, great descriptions. They called what I would normally call Pal-sek, Pal-che de. I think he may have said they used to call it Bassai until Kim decided to change it. The book was published by the International Tang Soo Do Federation, IIRC. >In the Japanese and Korean styles I've studied, I've always called >it Bassai. I do know some of the TKD styles call it Pal-sek. Does your style(s) have more than one Bassai? In that same book, there was a form called Pal-che sho as well (translating roughly to "the lesser of the best", or something like that, I think). It was the first I'd seen of two bassai/pal-sek forms... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I'm not so sure that grace, fluidity and effectiveness are not the same thing when techniques are properly executed. The grace and fluidity can lead to speed and power when the technique is executed with proper body mechanics and intent. The most impressive and effective martial artist I have worked with combine these three attributes in their techniques. I have been both on the receiving end and watched from the side and can see and feel the difference. The sequence usually goes a light touch to excruciating pain to airborne to more pain and can't move. And this all seems to happen in the blink of an eye. (Disclaimer: I have not seen GM Ji Han Jae, Master Hillard, ..... from or mentioned on the list, so I am in no way implying what anyone capabilities are. I am also not siding with or advocating anyone else position but my own.) I have also always been told that forcing a technique instead of leading your opponent or partner in to it, as the case may be, is poor execution of the technique. This would seem to indicate that some measure of grace and fluidity is required for effectiveness, unless you are bigger, stronger and faster than everyone else.
