There are very few sites on Han Pul, and I was > wondering if anyone could give me some information > such as stylistic focuses or just some web site links. There is a bit of info on Han Pul in Dr. Kimm's Hapkido books. Also this tidbit from the-spa.com Han-Pul Korean Specialized Self Defense Adult Programs(Ages 12-up) Han Pul is a Korean style of martial art unlike most popular styles. Han Pul is for people of all ages interested in the serious pursuit of martial art techniques and philosophy. Han Pul is NOT a sport karate. There are no kata or tournaments. Students learn focus & technique, not just power & contact. Han Pul stresses: * Long, powerful strikes and kicks that use the power of the whole body * Focused techniques that forcefully neutralize the opponent's attacks * Joint manipulations for throws, take-downs, pins, and weapon defense * Fighting skills such as falling, rolling, blocking, avoiding, and jumping * Relaxed intensity with pinpoint delivery of forceful techniques to pressure points * Practical self defense, street fighting, and the use of common objects as weapons * Weapons training in knife, sword, short stick, long staff, and cane SPECIAL CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS Han Pul for children is a specialized combination of martial arts and psychology that emphasizes building self confidence, inner control, respect, and assertiveness. Instructors use a firm, positive, non-punitive approach to teaching. Each child is taught according to his or her ability. Competition and fighting are de-emphasized, and technique, focus, and balance are stressed. Han Pul for children offers: * Basic Offense/Defense Martial Art Skills * Multiple Strategies for Coping with Bullies * Physical conditioning by Jumping, Rolling, and Safe Falling * Self Defense and Personal Safety Skills 1695 Main St., Suite 200 Springfield, MA 01103 413 739-9223 E-mail: john.murphy@the-spa.com Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 19:44:09 -0500 From: "d.mchenry" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Bassai & Naihanchi Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Nathan, <> We only do the one Bassai (Dae). Most of the Okinawan and Japanese styles which this comes from does do 2 different verions, Bassai Dae and Bassai Sho. The only Korean styles I've seen do both of them tended to follow more from the KongSooDo side or those who's founders had learned Japanese Karate first prior to TangSooDo/TaeKwonDo. You don't see Bassai sho done much in Korean Karate. (at least I haven't) I believe both of them were documented in the Encyclopedia of Korean Karate Forms "Kong Soo Do Hyung Pek-kwa" (I think that's the spelling, I don't have it in front of me). ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the EV1 webmail system at mail.ev1.net --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] RE: Forms/Hyung/Kata Stuff To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 18:36:09 PDT Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Regarding Naihanchi... I've raised this question in previous years, but new list subscribers bring new info. I postulate that Naihanchi is perhaps the oldest Karate-ish kata/hyung/poomse/form still being actively taught and practiced today. Hwang Kee claims it originated about 900 years ago. Comments? The title of the thread was Bassai and Naihanchi. I was talking about one, then the other. But yes, I noticed when I read that as well that my thoughts were running faster than my fingers and I wasn't clear when I moved from discussion Bassai to Naihanchi. I thought it might be obvious, guess not. My bad. And I'm with you, I enjoy performing all three of the Naihanchi hyungs together as one. I thought I read some where that Funikoshi did as well, and he called it Nihanchi-O or something like that when done as one. The first form I ever remember seeing that got me very interested in and caused me to sign up for TaeKwonDo was Naihanchi Chodan/Tekki Shodan/Chulgi 1 or what ever you want to call it :-) Later, Mac ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the EV1 webmail system at mail.ev1.net --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 18:26:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Richards To: Dojang Digest Subject: [The_Dojang] KJN Duk Sung Son Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Can anyone tell me anything about the training of Duk Sung Son, and in particular the Kwan he originally belonged to in Korea. He is the senior author of "Korean Karate, the art of tae kwon do". Thanks, Danny Dunn He is Chung Do Kwan. You'll find several references to him in the Modern History of Taekwondo. Find it off http://martialartsresource.com. If my memory serves me correctly, Master Son is a member of the Kuk Mu Kwan, and was under Lee Won Kuk of the Chung Do Kwan....J. R. West www.hapkido.com Master Dunn, My seniors gave you the answer I would have. Duk Sung Son is a student of Lee Won Kuk, and I believe at one point successor GM, and senior to my first GM Jhoon Rhee. Depending on when the book was written (pre 1973?, or pre 1961?) and based on the tittle "Korean Karate." It is probably a good recorded reference of Lee Won Kuk's Chung Do Kwan Tang Soo Do of circa 1944, and should be an excellent addition to us TSD players' library. She has been around 8-10 yrs but still how do I make parents and perspective student realize that I offer a better service that will stay with them from now on if they will not even come through the doors. Dear Chris, Here are some concepts from Steven Oliver and his extroardinary marketting program (I get the email for free because he's still trying to sell me the program). Just charge more...relate you lessons to higher priced services with less value. I charge +/- $7/lesson after much prodding from my sister that she was paying $10 per lesson for dance classes ten years ago. Recently I saw an ad in a newsletter I'm in that said... Grandma watches your children in her home $10/hr./child. This is just to watch, with no teaching...hmmmmm. I'm sure as a grandma she has the same 17 years experience I have (with at least one child), but I "watch" the child for an hour for $7 and the ones that pay attention learn some martial arts. If they can't see that perspective as value added, you probably won't enjoy teaching them. Or Oliver would say, just raise you tuition. All of us know you have the same headaches, testing, gear orders, parent conferences with 15 students as 50. Or put another way 20 students at $80/month ($10/class) is $1,600 gross income and requires way less space (rent) than 50 students at $25/month $1,250 gross income. Yes when you raise tuition you will loose students, but often the "energy vampires" are the first to go :-) Absorb what is useful Flame me on the rest, Charles R. Moja Kwan LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! Does anyone else take this approach, or am I just a freak? Dear Greg, Actually your dead on. One of the reasons I like "joint manipulations" and "pain compliance" techniques is it gives the idiot, uncle-dad, whoever an opportunity to comply :-), and the defender the option to convert to something more severe with increased force/intensity. Or put another way, the basic motion to a point of compliance is what you do to uncle-dad, and the boogie man is just a demonstration dummy in disguise :-) Yours in Jung DO, Charles R.
