Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Teressa, I think that it starts from our learning/teacing process since during class we do train with lower and higher ranks and we are taught to adjust to their skills. virginio rodriguez --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 13:38:32 -0500 From: "Bruce Sims" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Waist power Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Charels: ".....Actually, TSD is supposed to be performed using the entire body especially twisting of the waist to generate power. Maybe the lack of video/intermediate pictures leaves this out, or these guys have a more Hard/hard Kong Soo Do feel than us Hard/soft Tang Soo Do players?...." I think you hit the nail on the head. I went back and looked at a number of the books with sequential pictures of kata moves and it became very plain that those versions of the kata we are talking about had considerable variance concerning to what degree the waist, and its attendant muscles, is used. I can only characterize it by saying that the more "rigid" execution seems to be a turning or twisting of the waist while the more fluid execution seems to show a kind of "torquing"/"un-torquing". I can speak to this very effectively right now as quite recently Kevin was coaching me with a jump spinning heel-kick and it became very palin that one cannot execute this kick without the very torquing of the waist of which I speak (thank you, Kevin). I can't speak to some of the biomechanics or principles that I run into sometimes, like the "Sine Wave" method of generating power. However, I have learned from personal experience that the great emphasis that both Okinawan and Chinese traditions place on use of the waist to generate power is in no way misguided, and this is a principle that comes up time and again in these kata. Choy as forwarded by Ray to the DD. Even though I have no connection with the ITF, let alone either of the factions currently at odds, its hard not to feel the strain and the animosity that seems to be coursing back and forth right now. Certainly there must be some hope that there can be a reconciliation. In the meantime, however, the rest of us in the KMA community must continue to progress. For me, that progress includes the following inquiry and I frame it as a supposition. 1.) Suppose one were to locate and organize a group of avid Hapkido practitioners, perhaps of varying skills and backgrounds----and ----- 2.) Suppose those group members were united with the intention of connecting with representatives of comparable art(s) from North Korea. 3.) Suppose that such a connection could be accomplished using such a venue as, perhaps, an ITF event hosted in NK at which such a group of stalwarts from the West would be willing to demonstrate. 4.) How would the members of the DD suggest such a group proceed in light of the recent events surrounding the ITF leadership. 5.) Are there factions of the ITF or some parallel organization that might be interested in examining my suppositions? I have proceeded for years under the assumption that organizations existed to serve the membership and not vice versa. I'm wondering if there exists even the remote chance that I might have been right, even if it must be proven by folks long considered an enemy. Nor am I above the same consideration for the folks in Cuba. I now return you to our regularly scheduled madness. Ray), Sorry, Duk Sung Son... BTW, I have a friend (now running his own TKD school) that came up under the GM back in the 1960s. I'd be glad to send any (reasonable) questions his way, if that would be of interest. 1. At what point did GM transition from the Funakoshi/TSD ala Won Kuk Lee patterns to the WTF (or ITF patterns)? 2. During the early 1960's did GM call the art Tang Soo Do or Tae Kwon Do? 3. Did the CDK ever do the TSD forms not retained by the Shotokan (Rho Hai, Oh Sip Sa Bo, and So Rim Jang Kwon)? 4. Is there a Chulgi Yi Dan and Chulgi Sam Dan, and if so are they the same/resemble Naihanji/Tekki 2&3? Please convey warmest regards from a hunble player in his "down-line" 2nd Gup from VA TECH Jhoon Rhee Club under Master Charlie (Chong) Lee, who is a student of GM Jhoon Rhee, who was a student of GM Duk Sung Son. Can anyone help with demo ideas that I could use either as a form demo, or something I could put together for my class to participate? I prefer the latter. I'd say you're being groomed as a masters candidate. Organizing governing body events (tournaments and mass testings) are administrallia that many NGB's want to see their 2nd and 3rd dans able to execute. Generally a demonstration at such an event is reserved for Master Instructors or senior ranked Chief Instructors. Take it as a complement from your MI. I have two schools of thought when preparing a demo and audience usually dictates which one I do. For enrolling new students a group of low to mid rank students of all ages and abillities doing say a syncro form gives people an idea of the precision and discipline but also the "I think I could do that and it looks fun" feeling....leads to inquiry and enrollments....For a "Masters Demo" with you NGB being the audience something more advanced is appropriate, or your specialty or parallel skills. Advanced step sparring/hoshinsul with takedowns, defense against weapons, weapons forms, advanced forms, advanced breaking and blackbelts doing syncro forms are all good ideas for that audience. Geumgang tourism Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mt. Geumgang Tourism Project Picks Up Steam May 8, 2002 The once staggering Mt. Geumgang tourist project, the most significant symbol of inter-Korean exchanges, has begun to pick up steam recently, buoyed by the government's provision of financial assistance, among other things. The number of tourists to the scenic resort area in North Korea has increased sharply, prompting related authorities to seek ways to accommodate the tourists' increasing demand for more facilities. The Unification Ministry said on Wednesday (May 8) it has approved the application by Hyundai Asan, operator of the tour program, for the establishment of more lodging and entertainment facilities on Mt. Geumgang. Asan's new project toward that end features setting up entertainment facilities including bungee jump stands, which will be installed at the Jangjeon Port area, at the cost of $505,000. Other projects include modifying the current makeshift facilities, which were formerly used for lodging the Hyundai construction workers and clearance offices, to accommodate the increasing number of tourists, mainly youngsters and university students visiting the area in groups. Other convenience facilities, such as a medical center, restaurants and stores, will also be set up. The modified facilities, which will cost a total of $657,000, will be used temporarily until permanent ones are established, said a ministry official. With the approval of the new business plan, the sixth since the government first initiated the tourism project in September 1998, the entire investment into the project will increase to $198.22 million. The ministry said the number of tourists to the mountainous area has continued to increase drastically, reaching 7,000 level per month, meeting the full capacity of the pleasure boat Seolbong. "Apparently boosted by the government's offering of the financial assistance from last month, the number of tourists has drastically increased," said the official. The portion of the beneficiaries for the assistance amounted to 48 percent of the total 4,800 visitors in April. In the meantime, the ministry also said a new tourism package will be offered from May 18, which will reach the Dorasan Station, the last northernmost stop in South Korea on the route of the now-severed Gyeongui line, linking Seoul and Sineuiju, and an observatory pavilion there. Dorasan Station has become a famous tourist destination since U.S. President George W. Bush visited there together with President Kim Dae-jung when he visited here in early February. _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
