I am in the WTA and we do not do any ITF forms. Only pyonan (sp?) hyung and Bassai in the black belt ranks. Ray), Sorry, Duk Sung Son... BTW, I have a friend (now running his own TKD school) that came up under the GM back in the 1960s. I'd be glad to send any (reasonable) questions his way, if that would be of interest. 1. At what point did GM transition from the Funakoshi/TSD ala Won Kuk Lee patterns to the WTF (or ITF patterns)? 2. During the early 1960's did GM call the art Tang Soo Do or Tae Kwon Do? 3. Did the CDK ever do the TSD forms not retained by the Shotokan (Rho Hai, Oh Sip Sa Bo, and So Rim Jang Kwon)? 4. Is there a Chulgi Yi Dan and Chulgi Sam Dan, and if so are they the same/resemble Naihanji/Tekki 2&3? Please convey warmest regards from a hunble player in his "down-line" 2nd Gup from VA TECH Jhoon Rhee Club under Master Charlie (Chong) Lee, who is a student of GM Jhoon Rhee, who was a student of GM Duk Sung Son. Serious Demo Problem (John Klingler) Sir, How we do demo at our school is that everyone in the class participates at some point. We had the Children's class, a group, show Kimase and punching, also 4-way pattern and the basic kicking techniques, along with a breaking (3 lines running side kick) Adult Colored belts, as a group, did Kicking counter attacks, One step sparring and a turning side kick group break (each person had a black belt partner for each and that black belt was also their holder) Junior Black Belts did 21 movement as a group. All black belts did Bo staff pattern as a group, we each had a technique with a partner to show, Advanced One step counter attacks, 22 Movement, Advance One Steps, 321 Steps, etc. Each dan group did their Pattern, and us 1st dans did Black Belt 4-way pattern which ended in a candle punch, each of us had a breaking with either a group or own our own depending. Our mater instructor preformed some self defense techniques a sword demo and brick breaking. Hope this helps. In my TSD school, we did our forms in every direction, eyes closed, ect. My TKD school tried it once and everyone screwed up. I told my honey (who takes TKD with me) to close his eyes, and he was the only one (besides me) that did his form right. The instructor asked me about it, so I told him. I think it's going to be a regular practice in my TKD school now. As far as what the techniques are for in the forms, I agree. Most TKD students don't know. I'm not bashing TKD (I do TKD), but some don't know what the techniques are for (most everyone except the BB's and red belts in the adult advanced class). The only reason I do, is because I go find out (ask questions, look it up, read books, ect). I was taught to do that in TSD. It's a good habbit to have. Have you ever gone through some type of event (accident, sport etc.), and when finished, you realize that you've been injured?? You're body may have felt the pain and resulted in torn ligaments, broken bones etc., but your brain has not yet registered it yet allowing you to continue due to your focus on something else or adrenaline level. Being a very active person, I can attest to this. I know people on this list who have done contact sparring may also attest to this fact. Ever notice in class how if you just touch some people they writhe in pain and others you practically have to slam their face into the ground before they submit... and like it?? Everyone is different in that way and have been told about guys drinking, getting in fights and being hit with fists, bottles and different objects only to keep going and not feeling it until later. I love the idea of unbalancing and taking them down and flowing joint locks and submit that if this person is doing you or others harm, you need to do what you have to prevent any more injuries. If you take that person down though, they're going to try and get up and they're going to be mad!! I think we need to look beyond the physical techniques and look at luring this person out of the situation or holding on long enough to get them outside or locked in a room. I believe that if you've never been in this situation you're likely to get hurt. If your first attempt doesn't work, you need to have a backup plan, and then a backup for a backup and the thing is going to quickly escalate. There are many people that think they can handle it or have a plan, but it is not cut and dried, every situation is different and most times the answer is going to be "it depends". We probably need to work more on awareness, de-escalation, and conflict management and resolution. We need to work on flow drills and unwilling participants. If someone tells you they have the answer all figured out w/ a solution, then they've never dealt with this day in and day out. I know I don't have the answer.
