Yes some schools teach TKD as sport. But not all schools (like mine) do. We learn the fancy kicks and all, but when we are doing step sparring, techniques, and self defense, we don't do them. We use a lot more hand techniques, low kicks, ext. My school is serious about self defense, not sport (eventhough we do have the option). <<<>> Who says it's not a martial art? Ok, I used to be a TKD basher (because of the sport thing), but I tried it for myself. Maybe I picked a good school, but I haven't done anything yet that was geared toward "sport". <<<>>> Sounds like they came from a Mcdojang. <<<>>> I did not ask what TKD lacks. Someone asked about focus on forms, and I replied. I said most kids don't know the applications (mostly because they don't ask). As far as I can see, TKD doesn't lack anything (of course I don't go to a McDojang). _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com --__--__-- Message: 3 From: MSKBEvans@aol.com Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 11:36:23 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] ustu color belt extravaganza Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello, I am going to the ustu color belt extravaganza next week. This will be my first time going to a ustu national event. Can someone tell me what the dress code for coaches is at this event? Also I'm curious to hear from someone who has been there in the past how many competitors will be in the divisions on average for color belt men. thanks for your help Bill Evans --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] TKD To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 10:43:08 PDT Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > What many people don't realize is that straight TKD is a sport. I suspect that many TKDers, e.g. our ITF friends, our WTA friends, etc, etc would disagree with this statement. Perhaps a better way to put it is that Kukki-Taekwondo as currently taught (for the most part) in South Korea is a martial sport. My class is somewhat small (about 15) and since I have not been teaching but for about 2.5 years I don't have any blackbelts to use. Most are in their early teens. With falling attendance in the classes mainly due I believe to the end of the school year, one class I was the only attendee. Master Kim and I ended up eating sushi instead. During the meal I brought up the possibility of introducing free sparing in to the Hapkido curriculum. I 'm not sure about the other hapkido schools around but for the most part our classes focus on warm-up, stretching, rolls and falls, kick and strike defenses, kick and strike practice, weapons defenses and hand techniques. We sometimes do some light grappling however in the near two years at the school we've never done free sparring ala TKD. Well, we finally did or at least close to it. It's been literally almost two decades since I've had the opportunity to free spar. Since hapkido is a combination of different techniques and styles it seemed right that the curriculum should include free sparring just for the sake of mixing it up. So we sparred one on the attack and one defending using pads, for 1 minute rounds. Total of three minutes attacking and three defending. I think it's added a needed element missing to our classes. I'd be curious to hear the curriculums used at some of the other schools who's students are on the list. When I practice all 3 Naihanchi hyung, I will just go from one to the other, I don't split them up and do part of one, then the other, etc. I know they are a bit different than ShotoKan version, as I remember having a bit of a hard time switching versions after one of them had been ingrained in my brain already. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 17:28:17 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] NK Officials Arrive in Seoul for Talks Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net NK Officials Arrive in Seoul for Talks May 19, 2002 Ten North Koreans, mostly experts in the areas of nuclear energy and aerospace, arrived in Seoul on Sunday (May 19) to inspect South Korea's related facilities with the goal of setting up a direct air route between the two Koreas to facilitate the light-water reactor project, a Unification Ministry official said. Their visit will have a positive impact on inter-Korean relations, which have remained stalled since North Korea unilaterally cancelled the South-North economic cooperation committee meeting. The second inter-Korean economic meeting was set to be held in Seoul for four days starting May 7. The North Korean officials who are set to stay here until May 24 will visit nuclear power plants, including one in Ulchin, North Gyeongsang Province, to learn about the operation of power plants, which is required to handle light-water reactors currently under construction by the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO). "They will also engage in in-depth talks with South Korean officials on ways to open the direct air route between the two Koreas for transporting personnel and materials for the construction of the light-water reactors in the North under the KEDO project," said the official on condition of anonymity. They will visit Yangyang airport in Gangwon Province which is set to be used as the South's location for the inter-Korean direct route. "If Yangyang airport is found not to be suitable for the project, Gimhae airport will be the alternative," said a ministry official. Their visit is expected to speed up the slow construction of two light-water reactors under the KEDO project. North Korea and KEDO have been expediting efforts to construct the nuclear reactors and enable the nuclear inspectors to have access to the North's related facilities since Pyeongyang announced it would resume negotiations with KEDO in April 3. Nineteen North Korean nuclear experts visited related facilities in the South at the end of last year as part of a training program. The project is likely to help expedite the envisioned dialogue between North Korea and the United States amid moves by Jack Pritchard, U.S. envoy for negotiations with the North, to visit Pyeongyang to resume to suspended bilateral talks. "The North's move in that respect may give the impression that it is ready to adopt a more flexible attitude in dealing with future dialogue with the U.S. as well as the South, thus helping prompt the dialogue between Pyeongyang and Washington," said the official. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
