Generally we will cover: TangSooDo and Taekwondo forms, step and free sparring, hoshinsul (self-defense), and weapons (for adults). I'm going to guess Master Hodder will cover escrima again, and I'm working on some Iaido and KumSul for this year. Master Terry please add the March 2003 Invitational to your Sport TKD Calendar when you get a chance. [ Message: 5 [ From: "michael tomlinson" [ The_Dojang digest, Vol 9 #261 [ Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 00:52:02 +0000 [I respect everyones opinion on here and I also understand that certain [drills can be practiced alone, but you cannot, I repeat cannot learn to [grapple effectively unless you have a live body going against you,, [grappling involves the sense of touch and is an everchanging dynamic [situation that involves balance, and will, and you cannot learn this by [yourself,, you might think you can but you are only fooling yourself into a [sense of false security if you practice this way,, how do you develop a [single kata to simulate the feeling you get when someone is trying to choke [you to death from behind with their hooks into you? I guess you could tie a [rope around your neck, duct tape your legs together, and then have a [swinging paint bucket smash you in the skull every two seconds while you [hold a deep horse stance and breathe deeply? You can always come up with [something but if you aren't grappling against a live body you are basically [doing less than dry firing your weapon at a tickle me elmo doll!! Dry firing your weapon at a doll is a bona fide technique of some NRA instructors. One of my early police firearms instructors had me dryfiring with a dime balanced on the barrel before any other drills. Could I have learned shooting with dryfiring and never using bullets? no. It was only one drill of many, one tool of many. I suspect grappling hyungs are not intended to be a complete replacement of randori, but if by yourself at the moment, can be one tool of many. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 13:45:58 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: not a pretty thought Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> thanks for the historical POV, bruce. your comments do make sense and i'm glad that KMA's have evolved away from that aspect to become what they have today. melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 7 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 13:48:03 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: louis v. schmelling Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> yes, it was :). although i'm sure they took some creative license, i found it to be an excellent film and now back to your regularly scheduled KMA discussion ;) ... melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 11:00:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Richards To: Dojang Digest Subject: [The_Dojang] High Kicks Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> I do not teach that high kicking is the best strategy to use in a self defense situation, in fact, just the opposite. However, I am a kicker and have been doing it for 29 years. I believe that there are lots of situations where head kicks can be used effectively. And let me add that in challenge type situations, nothing ends the aggressors will to continue faster than a good kick to the head. Been there and seen it several times. I agree with Patrick, that I've always heard about the danger of having a kick caught, but I don't intend to give the opponent that opportunity. Personally, I worry more about someone who knows how to counter with leg and other low kicks than someone trapping my leg. But again, I don't intend to give someone I think has the ability to use those techniques the opportunity. My experience has shown that high kicks are effective and safe when properly used, just like any other type of technique. All hypotheses and suppositions aside, train hard and do what you know. <> Kewl Post Master Dunn, I hope we can still chat about old times when you make it to Hotlanta. I'll be sure to bring my headgear with me. I've seen your splits, so my best bet is to start working on some low counter kicks ... Seriously on the do what you know score Charles at age 19 on the NASKA circuit as a Green, Blue and Red Belt could score almost at will with a front leg roundkick to the head...ask the guys with the headgear twisted around 90 degrees if they thought it was effective. Mr. Richards as a 27 year old Cho Dan expect to get clocked in the back of the head with a spin hook kick or get your headgear twisted even more with a spin crescent :-) Master Richards at 35+ favorite Kicks; JKD stop hit (low side kick) to the shin/knee, Muy Thai roundkick to the knee, thigh or floating rib, front kick to the groin, hip joint or lower abs. On a sunny day after I'm stretched out, I might side kick the nerves under the armpit, if I'm lucky enough to trap that arm :-) As to protecting joints, etc. we rarely "snatch at air" and mostly use a focus or power target... We still set the target for head height and try for head kicks in competition sparring because it increases the range of options, and in AAU competition, leg grabs, sweeps, and attacks below the belt are against the rules... Train hard and use what works. (3) A meeting to reverse the decision was held, not all were permitted to attend. (4) Some claim it was done legally. Others claim it was not done legally. You can probably figure out who thinks what. (5) Given #3 and #4, Master Choi formed another ITF (aka ITF Canada) given he was the legal(?) head of the ITF. Some in the original ITF went back under Major General Choi (aka ITF Vienna or ITF North Korea). (6) Major General Choi is now apparently in North Korea recovering(?) from cancer. Some figure he went 'back home' to die. Let us pray that is not the case.
