Here are some of them foreign visitors can enjoy a slice of Korea's cultural side while they're here. For those who just want to bang on a drum all day, it's the skins at the Seoul Drum Festival 2002, which began May 28 and will continue through June 5, giving them several days of international rhythmic festivities, and best of all, admission is free. The outdoor stage in front of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts downtown is where the action is, and in the center's pavilion, through June 11, is an exhibition of drums from around the world. The center is up the street from Gwanghwamun Station of Line 5. There will also be drum performances in front of the National Folk Museum on the grounds of Gyeongbok Palace and at the Peace Park next to Seoul World Cup Stadium in Sangam-dong, northwestern Seoul. Call (82-2) 3707-9419/20 for details, or go to www.drumfestival.co.kr. As one of Asia's leading information technology (IT) innovators, Korea is rightfully proud of its achievements. For an immersion in the wired world, check out the Digital Broadcasting Hall for IT Experience and the Pavilion of IT Enterprises, in Yeoido Park (Line 5, Yeouido and Yeoinaru stations). Along with this, a varied program of public art performances, animation screenings and even traditional performances will be held until June 16 during the IT Experience and Cultural Festival, all at no cost for admission. For more information, contact the organizers at (82-2) 6321-4360/1. If the visitors have children, or want to regain a bit of childhood, they are recommended to go to the marionette performance "Korean Fantasy," held through June 9 at Yeongang Hall downtown. Puppeteer Cho Yong-Seok strings along his cast in a presentation of different Korean performing traditions, from "samulnori" (play of four different percussions) to a fan dance, at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. every day. The hall is near the Chongno O(5)-ga Station of Line 1, and admission is 15,000 won. For details, call (82-2) 708-5001. The Seoul Mask Dance Festival 2002 is another outstanding event, not only because mask dancing is an ancient and fascinating tradition here, but because teams from Bhutan, Indonesia, Nepal, Taiwan and Thailand are taking part. The traditional performing space at Samcheonggak on beautiful Mt. Bugak is the site of this free event from 4:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. from June 8-16. Along with the dances will be a mask exhibit, demonstrations of mask making and dance classes. Samcheonggak can be reached by a shuttle bus that leaves from Gwanghwamun Station every 20 minutes. To find out more, call (82-2) 3676-2345 or go to www.samcheonggak.or.kr. Life in the old days wasn't all work and no fun, as you can discover at the Namsangol Traditional Korean Village every weekend from June 8 to 30. There will be "pansori" (narrative song) performance, mask dancing, folk music and more, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On June 15, the village celebrates "Danjeol," a rite-of-passage day for youth, with traditional games and customs reenacted. It's all free, so head to the village (Chungmuro Station of Lines 3 and 4) to see the way things were. Call (82-2) 2266-6937/8 or go to www.fpcp.or.kr for all the details. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Boit Clinton L Capt 67IOW/MO To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2002 11:13:06 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] (U) Black Belt Promotions... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello everyone! I have pondered these thoughts over the last several years... "Should everyone who trains adequately BE promoted if they meet the minimum requirements?" "Should examination requirements be adjusted for people with special needs? If so, where do you draw the line and what should you consider/not-consider for a special needs?" Lastly (sorry this is a lot o' questions), SPARRING for black belt ranks - I have some up-and-coming gup students who are deathly afraid of sparring. They spar in class, but are very hesitant due to fear of injury. If these students are great students and rock when they do one-steps, fundamentals, forms, etc....should they be held back as the go for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Dans, etc. due to poor (not "equal-to-average ability") sparring? I used to be into nutrition and natural healing when I was a youngster; but have become adulterated along the way. I don't trust the AMA, FDA, USDA ...... for advice. Then you have everybody and there brother offering the "solution". Atkin's, Blood type diet, Colloidal minerals, etc. I have performed a fair amount of research and determined that everything is bad or good for us. The more I learn, the less I know! The (post-split) ITF Vienna camp maintains this was true b. The ITF Canada says no such merger was planned, or desired 2. The WTF has unequivocally stated that no such merger was planned - indeed that they had never had such communications with anyone in the ITF. If you dig around a little, its not too hard to come up with the various press releases stating all of the above points. -John Wallace 1st gup, TKD (unaffiliated) Fremont, CA -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Pratt [mailto:andrewpratt@ircltd.com] Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 9:25 PM To: dojang Subject: [The_Dojang] The real reason for the ITF split? Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2002 13:34:44 -0700 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sir As I'm not even a Dan holder yet, consider the source of the opinion, but respectfully, I would not promote someone who was reluctant to spar to Black Belt rank. To my understanding, a black belt at a minimum needs to be fundamentally sound in the basics of all areas of their martial art. Someone who is apprehensive either about receiving blows, or dealing them out has significant personal growth that they have yet to achieve. It could be that they don't have the confidence in their ability to control their own degree of intensity or force and are concerned for their fellow student. I think that even in this case, the compassionate gup ranked student needs more time before they are considered for Dan ranking. At both dojangs that I've belonged to over the years, we've stressed over and over again that by far the best person for a student new to sparring to work with is a black belt, because the black belt has good enough control to avoid hurting you, and superior self-control to the point where a "newbie" scoring on them won't enrage them. I believe it would be a disservice to your lower ranks to promote someone who would not be an effective partner in sparring. I expect the black belts that I spar against to be able to analyze what I'm doing and offer constructive criticism. Someone who's focussing their mental energy on avoiding contact and managing their own anxiety is not going to be a useful sparring partner.
